Principal Mechanical Engineer (Low Carbon / Energy Transition)

Location: Remote (Occasional travel to London, Manchester, Newcastle, or Glasgow)

Contract: 6 Months Rolling (Inside IR35)

Rate: Up to £60/hr

Are you a Chartered Mechanical Engineer with a strong background in thermal power plant design and Balance of Plant (BoP) systems? Ready to apply your conventional power expertise to next-generation low-carbon energy transition projects across the UK?

Our client's Energy Transition Team is looking for a Principal Mechanical Engineer to lead mechanical design delivery across a range of high-impact energy projects-spanning Carbon Capture (CCUS), Hydrogen, Energy-from-Waste (EfW), and industrial energy systems.



Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead mechanical design engineering across Feasibility, Concept, FEED, and Detailed Design phases.

  • Produce calculations (MathCAD), equipment specifications, and datasheets for key rotating and static equipment (turbines, compressors, pumps, pressure vessels, heat exchangers).

  • Deliver mechanical engineering design for Balance of Plant (BoP) systems and auxiliary services.

  • Collaborate with Process Engineering on PFDs and P&IDs, and participate in 3D model reviews and plant layout development.

  • Review vendor proposals and liaise directly with OEMs, EPC contractors, and key project stakeholders.

  • Conduct engineering integrity assessments and troubleshooting for operational thermal assets.



What We Are Looking For:

  • BSc / MSc in Mechanical Engineering (or related discipline).

  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or actively working towards.

  • Proven track record in thermal and/or combined-cycle power plant (CCGT) engineering.

  • Essential experience in Balance of Plant (BoP) systems, pressure vessels, and piping design/stress analysis.

  • Strong working knowledge of gas turbine systems and associated plant auxiliaries.

  • Proficiency with MathCAD for engineering calculations and MS Excel for technical datasheets.

  • Experience collaborating with OEMs, EPCs, or operational thermal assets.
