Private Sector Housing Officer

A local authority in the North West is seeking an experienced Private Sector Housing Officer to join their team on an initial 6-month contract.

This is an excellent opportunity to work within a busy regulatory service, delivering Private Sector Housing functions while also supporting the Environmental Health team with Statutory Nuisance investigations. The successful candidate will play a key role in protecting residents, improving housing standards, and ensuring compliance with relevant legislation.

Key Responsibilities

• Carry out inspections of private sector residential properties.
• Assess housing conditions using the Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS).
• Investigate complaints relating to housing disrepair, poor housing conditions, and landlord compliance.
• Prepare and serve statutory notices and undertake enforcement action where necessary.
• Support the investigation of Statutory Nuisance complaints, including noise and environmental issues.
• Provide guidance and advice to landlords, tenants, and property managers.
• Prepare case files, reports, and legal documentation.
• Work collaboratively with internal departments and external agencies to achieve positive outcomes.

Essential Requirements

• Previous experience working within a local authority Private Sector Housing Team.
• Strong knowledge of the Housing Act 2004 and HHSRS.
• Experience undertaking housing inspections and enforcement activity.
• Experience investigating or supporting Statutory Nuisance cases.
• Excellent communication and case management skills.
• Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle.

Desirable

• Environmental Health qualification or relevant housing qualification.
• Experience serving improvement notices and undertaking formal enforcement action.
• Knowledge of Environmental Protection Act 1990 legislation.
