Project Engineer – Staff – Manufacturing (COMAH site) – Salary + Benefits – Essex (East Coast side)

Role:

Our leading chemicals manufacturing client based in Essex is seeking a Project Engineer on a staff basis. The Project Engineer is responsible for managing engineering maintenance and capital project activities across the site, covering mechanical, electrical and control systems. The role focuses on ensuring the safe, efficient and cost-effective delivery of engineering projects and maintenance activities while supporting site reliability, compliance and continuous improvement.

The successful candidate will identify opportunities for improvement, develop engineering concepts into fully defined Management of Change (MOC) and Capital Expenditure (CAPEX) proposals, and oversee projects from initial concept through to commissioning. They will also ensure engineering documentation, maintenance systems and asset records remain accurate and up to date.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage engineering maintenance, compliance inspections and reliability improvement activities to ensure plant assets operate safely and efficiently.
  • Lead engineering projects from concept through design, approval, implementation and commissioning, ensuring delivery on time and within budget.
  • Develop Management of Change (MOC) and CAPEX proposals, including technical and financial justifications.
  • Plan engineering work by providing clear work scopes, drawings, engineering instructions, safe systems of work and ensuring contractors and employees are competent to undertake the required activities.
  • Maintain and continually improve engineering documentation, including operating procedures, P&IDs, electrical drawings, maintenance schedules, equipment registers, SAP maintenance records, work orders and task instructions.
  • Prepare project cost estimates and financial proposals, monitor expenditure and ensure projects are delivered within agreed budgets and timescales.
  • Support engineering procurement by preparing technical specifications, obtaining quotations and raising purchase requisitions.
  • Select, manage and monitor engineering contractors, ensuring compliance with health, safety and environmental legislation, company procedures and contractor management standards.
  • Promote continuous improvement by identifying opportunities to improve engineering systems, maintenance planning, asset reliability, stock management and the effective use of SAP and other engineering software.
  • Ensure compliance with ISO management systems, company policies and all relevant health, safety and environmental legislation.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • A minimum Level 4 qualification in Engineering, such as an HNC, NVQ or equivalent in an engineering or maintenance discipline.
  • Experience in engineering maintenance and/or project engineering within a process manufacturing environment is preferred.
  • A multi-disciplinary engineering background, covering mechanical and electrical systems, would be advantageous.
  • Experience of working within regulated industrial environments and an understanding of engineering compliance and health and safety legislation.
