Our client is seeking an experienced and driven Senior Project Manager to lead the successful delivery of complex civil engineering and infrastructure projects. The successful candidate will oversee multiple live schemes, manage project teams, coordinate design and construction activities, and ensure projects are delivered safely, on programme, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.
This role requires a strong background in heavy civil engineering, highways, infrastructure, utilities, and stakeholder management, with the ability to lead multidisciplinary teams from pre-construction through to project completion.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage multiple concurrent civil engineering projects across various locations.
- Lead and coordinate site management teams, ensuring efficient delivery and resource allocation.
- Oversee projects involving:
- Section 278 (S278) works on existing highways.
- Section 38 (S38) highway works for new developments.
- Heavy civil engineering works.
- Earthworks and bulk excavation.
- Drainage infrastructure, including new installations.
- Manage the coordination of statutory undertaker diversions and new utility installations.
- Participate in and lead Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) activities, providing buildability and programme input during pre-construction.
- Act as the lead for design coordination, ensuring consultants and designers deliver information in accordance with programme requirements.
- Undertake the duties of Temporary Works Coordinator where required.
- Fulfil Appointed Person responsibilities for lifting operations where applicable.
- Produce and maintain detailed construction programmes using Microsoft Project (MPP), updating progress throughout the project lifecycle.
- Monitor programme performance and implement recovery strategies where necessary.
- Monitor project expenditure, cost performance and commercial progress.
- Produce accurate monthly project progress and commercial reports.
- Ensure compliance with all health, safety, environmental and quality standards.
- Manage labour, plant and resource allocation across multiple projects.
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with clients, consultants, local authorities, statutory bodies and other key stakeholders.
- Drive continuous improvement through Lean Construction principles and best practice methodologies.
Experience & Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess:
- Proven experience managing multiple civil engineering projects simultaneously.
- Strong knowledge and practical experience of:
- Section 278 highway works.
- Section 38 highway developments.
- Heavy civils.
- Earthworks.
- Drainage and utility infrastructure.
- Statutory undertaker coordination.
- Early Contractor Involvement (ECI).
- Demonstrable experience leading multidisciplinary project and site teams.
- Experience coordinating design teams and managing consultant deliverables.
- Strong commercial awareness with experience monitoring project expenditure and reporting.
- Experience producing and managing construction programmes using Microsoft Project (MPP).
- Excellent understanding of programme management and progress tracking.
- Proven ability to manage workforce planning and resource allocation.
- Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills.
- Strong understanding of current Health & Safety legislation and CDM regulations.
- Experience implementing Lean Construction principles and continuous improvement initiatives.

Desirable Qualifications
- Degree or HNC/HND in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
- SMSTS.
- CSCS Management Card.
- Membership of ICE, CIOB or another relevant professional institution (desirable).
