Our local authority client based in Surrey are urgently seeking an experienced Property Legal Officer.

£25.88 an hour PAYE

2 days a week in the office

About the role

You will focus on property law and support contract work where required, assisting the Head of Legal & Governance, the Principal Lawyer and other Legal Team colleagues to deliver an effective legal service to the corporate client.

The main purpose of the role:

To assist the Head of Legal and Governance, Principal Lawyer and other staff in the Legal Team in delivering an effective legal service to the corporate client.

Specific duties and responsibilities

  1. Provide comprehensive legal advice and support on the Council’s property transactions, including conveyancing, commercial property matters, estate management and advice on corporate landholdings and other interests. Where required, also advise on contracts, statutory orders and other related matters.
  2. Working as part of a busy and friendly in-house legal team, engaging with and covering for colleagues as necessary and contributing to the achievement of Service Delivery Plan objectives.
  3. To manage own caseload effectively, doing so under the supervision of the Principal Lawyer, ensuring that files are kept in accordance with corporate and professional standards.
  4. Provide advice on legal risks to the Council arising from property matters and transactions handled by the team or wider organisation.
  5. Provide advice, draft, review, update and approve documents in relation to all forms of property transactions and where necessary, commercial contract documentation.
  6. Advise and support a very busy & commercially focused Asset Management and Property Services team in relation.
  7. Provide advice on matters relating to common land and open space property management.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Keeps up to date with changes in own area of expertise
  • Applies technical/professional knowledge to provide customers (internal and external) with the required service
  • A good understanding of modern political arrangements
  • Strong working knowledge of property and contract law and practice
  • Understanding of local government law
