Jackson Hogg Procurement division are delighted to be exclusively partnering with a well-established manufacturing organisation in Birtley on the appointment of a Purchasing Manager to join their team on a full-time and permanent basis. This is a rare opportunity to join a fantastic business and lead a stable and successful purchasing team!

Salary on offer is £50-£55k depending on experience, and benefits include a competitive annual bonus scheme, 25 days holiday plus bank holidays and hybrid working of 2-3 days per week from home. 

The Purchasing Manager will lead day-today purchasing activities, strengthen supplier performance and deliver measurable value across the UK business, while working closely with European colleagues and global suppliers.

As this role comes with direct reports, we are looking for good people management skills and the ability to supervise, motivate and develop the team. 

The Role:

Procurement strategy and commercial management

• Implement procurement strategy and policies
• Lead supplier selection, strategic sourcing, negotiations and contract management, including quarterly business reviews with key suppliers
• Manage ongoing rental agreements and service contracts for UK sites
• Contribute to savings targets, working-capital optimisation and continuous improvement of procurement processes

Supplier performance, risk and compliance

• Build and maintain effective supplier relationships and drive performance improvement
• Conduct supplier audits in collaboration with the Quality and Compliance teams
• Monitor commodity prices relevant to UK operations and escalate significant trends to the Head of department
• Ensure compliance with UK procurement requirements, including waste packaging and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), in coordination with Legal and Compliance

Team leadership and stakeholder support

• Provide direct line management for the UK Purchasing team, including resource planning, performance management and development
• Support procurement requirements across UK functions, including Marketing, Finance, HR, R&D and Group functions, ensuring efficient supplier selection and contract execution
• Work cross-functionally on New Product Introduction and Capex Investments

Systems, planning and data management

• Ensure supplier master data and purchased-item records are accurate and maintained in the ERP system, in line with company policies 
• Maintain procurement data, documentation & reporting in accordance with company guidelines.

Inventory & Supply Continuity Management:

• Ensure sufficient stock levels of raw materials are maintained to support production requirements, monitor inventory levels and supplier performance, and proactively manage supply risks to prevent material shortages while optimizing working capital.

The Person/Requirements:

• A minimum of five years’ procurement experience, ideally within an industrial or manufacturing environment
• Degree or diploma-level qualification, or CIPS Level 4 would be advantageous
• Demonstrable negotiation and contract management capability
• Experience of working effectively within an international matrix organisation
• Strong analytical skills, with the ability to define priorities and manage competing demands.
• Previous team leadership experience, supported by strong people-management and development skills
• Clear and confident communicator with strong interpersonal and networking skills
• Stakeholder-focused and results-driven, with a practical commercial mindset
• Proactive, flexible and solution-oriented
• Development focused mindset and resilient under pressure
• Strong strategic thinking skills and the ability to make effective business decisions
• Ability to travel in UK and Europe
