Role Overview:
A leading UK construction and infrastructure contractor is looking to appoint a Quantity Surveyor to join its commercial reactive works team.
The role will primarily be based from the Bristol office, although Exeter could be considered for the right candidate.
This is an opportunity to work within a busy commercial team delivering a large volume of smaller-value works across a diverse portfolio of rail building, civils, M&E, drainage and maintenance activities.
Projects can range in value from approximately £300 through to £2 million, although the majority of works typically sit within the £100,000 - £200,000 range.
Rather than focusing on a small number of major landmark projects, this position involves managing a high turnover of varied works simultaneously. It will therefore suit a Quantity Surveyor who enjoys variety, is commercially organised and is comfortable managing multiple packages and priorities at different stages.
Working closely with the operational team, you will help ensure the successful commercial delivery of framework contracts while maintaining strong internal and client relationships, maximising commercial returns and effectively managing risk.
You will also have responsibility for supporting and managing an Assistant Quantity Surveyor, so candidates should have sufficient experience to confidently take on this responsibility.
The company is flexible regarding sector background. Rail experience can be beneficial but is not essential, and candidates with relevant experience across housing, water, highways, nuclear, power, general construction, M&E, civils or similar environments will be considered.
Key Responsibilities:
·Implement the commercial strategy across a varied portfolio of reactive and small-value works.
·Work alongside the relevant Project Management and operational teams to support the profitability and successful commercial delivery of projects.
·Develop and maintain appropriate commercial strategies to support required project margins.
·Manage a large volume of smaller-value projects and work packages at different stages of the commercial lifecycle.
·Contribute to the management and maintenance of contract cost reporting systems, ensuring financial information remains accurate and up to date.
·Monitor project costs against budgets, tender allowances and commitments, identifying and managing any deviations.
·Produce accurate forecasts for project costs to completion and anticipated final values.
·Monitor cash flow and valuation plans, ensuring applications are prepared correctly and submitted within the required timescales.
·Manage work in progress levels and take appropriate action to support effective cash management.
·Identify, value and agree contract variations with clients in a timely manner.
·Maintain effective commercial records to support variations, applications and potential claims.
·Manage subcontract tendering processes, including subcontractor selection and the preparation of relevant commercial and contractual documentation.
·Ensure subcontract agreements appropriately reflect and step down responsibilities from the main contract.
·Manage subcontractor accounts in accordance with agreed terms and conditions.
·Provide accurate monthly cost and value reporting in accordance with company reporting procedures.
·Support and manage an Assistant Quantity Surveyor within the commercial team.
·Maintain effective relationships with operational colleagues, clients, subcontractors and other project stakeholders.
·Support the identification and management of commercial and contractual risk across the portfolio.
Essential Requirements:
·At least 1-2 years' experience working as a Quantity Surveyor.
·Commercial understanding across areas including cost reporting, forecasting, valuations, variations and subcontract management.
·Confidence to support and manage an Assistant Quantity Surveyor.
·Experience working for a main contractor, subcontractor or comparable construction or infrastructure organisation.
Desired Requirements:
·Previous experience managing a high volume of small-value or reactive works.
·Experience within maintenance, framework or similar high-turnover project environments.
·Experience across M&E, building, civils, drainage or multidisciplinary works.
·Experience working within rail, housing, highways, water, nuclear, power or another infrastructure or construction sector.
·Knowledge or experience of NEC3 or NEC4 contracts.
·Good contractual knowledge and an understanding of managing commercial risk.
·A BSc in Quantity Surveying or an equivalent qualification or level of experience.
·Working towards professional chartership or membership of a relevant professional body.
