Quantity Surveyor – The Company

Our client is a successful and growing specialist contractor delivering internal structured cabling and data installation packages on major new-build construction projects across the UK.

Specialising predominantly in Cat 6 structured cabling installations, their work forms part of some significant and high-profile developments, including large-scale, multi-floor commercial and office schemes.

This is not external fibre, telecoms or road civils. The business operates firmly within the construction environment, delivering specialist internal packages alongside some of the UK’s leading Tier 1 main contractors and M&E contractors.

With a strong pipeline of secured work and continued growth, they are now looking to appoint an experienced Quantity Surveyor to strengthen their commercial team.

The role will be based from their North Somerset headquarters, commercially managing projects across Bristol, London and elsewhere in the UK. There will be occasional travel to project sites, including London.

Structured cabling experience is not essential. The priority is finding a strong contractor-side QS who understands construction contracts, subcontracting and commercial management. Experience within electrical, M&E or another specialist construction contractor would be particularly relevant.

Quantity Surveyor – The Role

You will take commercial responsibility for a portfolio of projects, managing them from contract award through to final account.

Working closely with project and operational teams, you will deal directly with Quantity Surveyors and commercial teams from major main contractors and M&E contractors.

This will suit somebody commercially strong and assertive who is comfortable negotiating, challenging where necessary and ensuring the company’s contractual and financial interests are properly protected.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Commercial management of projects from contract award through to final account
  • Reviewing contracts, scopes and commercial risks
  • Preparing valuations, applications for payment and commercial reporting
  • Identifying, pricing and negotiating variations and additional works
  • Managing change control and protecting contractual entitlement
  • Liaising and negotiating directly with main contractor and M&E contractor Quantity Surveyors
  • Procurement and commercial management of specialist subcontractors
  • Assessing subcontractor applications, variations and final accounts
  • Monitoring project costs, margins, forecasts and cash flow
  • Maintaining contractual notices, records and supporting documentation
  • Resolving commercial issues and negotiating disputed items
  • Working closely with project managers and operational teams throughout delivery

Quantity Surveyor – The Person

You will ideally have:

  • Previous Quantity Surveying experience within a contractor or subcontractor environment
  • Experience within general building, electrical, M&E or specialist construction contracting
  • Structured cabling or data installation experience would be advantageous but is not essential
  • Experience commercially managing packages on larger construction projects
  • Good knowledge of construction contracts, variations and payment processes
  • Strong negotiation skills and confidence dealing with major contractor commercial teams
  • A commercially assertive approach with the ability to protect the company’s interests
  • Relevant Quantity Surveying or construction qualification preferred
  • Willingness to undertake occasional UK travel, including to London project sites
