Quantity Surveyor – Civil Engineering / Infrastructure

Location: Gatwick Airport
Salary: £60,000 – £65,000 + Package
Employment: Permanent

We are recruiting for an experienced Quantity Surveyor to join an established civil engineering and construction contractor delivering projects as part of a long-term civils framework at Gatwick Airport.

This is an excellent opportunity for a Quantity Surveyor who is ready to take greater ownership of projects and work directly with both the client and supply chain.

You will join an established commercial team consisting of a Commercial Manager and two Assistant Quantity Surveyors, providing a good balance of senior support while allowing you to take responsibility for your own commercial workload.

The Role

Working within the Gatwick civils framework, you will be responsible for the commercial management of allocated works and packages, working closely with the Commercial Manager, operational teams, client and subcontractors.

Key responsibilities will include:

• Managing commercial and contractual aspects of civil engineering projects
• Preparing valuations and applications for payment
• Cost control, forecasting and commercial reporting
• Managing subcontractor accounts, payments and variations
• Supporting subcontract procurement and package management
• Managing change and maintaining appropriate commercial records
• Attending and contributing to client and commercial meetings
• Working directly with subcontractors to resolve commercial matters
• Supporting the preparation and agreement of final accounts
• Working closely with Project Managers and site teams throughout project delivery

About You

You should be commercially confident and comfortable taking responsibility rather than operating purely in a supporting Assistant QS capacity.

Strong communication skills are particularly important for this position. You will regularly attend client meetings and deal directly with subcontractors, so you must have the confidence and personality to manage relationships, challenge where required and represent the commercial team effectively.

Previous airport experience would be beneficial but is not essential. Experience within civils, infrastructure, highways, rail, utilities or other complex construction environments would be particularly relevant.

Requirements

• Approximately 3–5 years’ Quantity Surveying experience
• Civil engineering, infrastructure or construction background
• Experience managing subcontractor accounts
• Good understanding of cost control, valuations and forecasting
• Commercially aware with strong negotiation skills
• Confident dealing directly with clients and subcontractors
• Able to attend and contribute effectively to client meetings
• Strong communication and stakeholder-management skills
• Quantity Surveying or construction-related qualification preferred

The Opportunity

This is an opportunity to join an established contractor working on a major long-term civils framework at one of the UK’s busiest airports.

The successful candidate will become an important part of a growing commercial team, with exposure to a varied programme of civil engineering and infrastructure projects and the opportunity to develop towards Senior Quantity Surveyor level.
