Quantity Surveyor
Workforce People and Data Ltd
Trainee / Graduate / Intermediate Quantity Surveyor
Location: Appley Bridge, Wigan
Salary: £28,000–£40,000, depending on experience
Job Type: Permanent
We are recruiting for a Trainee, Graduate or Intermediate Quantity Surveyor to join an established civil engineering contractor based in Appley Bridge, Wigan.
This is a rare opportunity to work directly alongside a highly experienced Quantity Surveyor who is approaching retirement. The successful candidate will receive hands-on training and gradually take over responsibility for the company’s commercial and quantity surveying functions.
The position could suit a recent Quantity Surveying graduate, an Assistant QS looking to progress or an Intermediate QS who wants greater responsibility and long-term career security.
The Role
You will initially support the existing Quantity Surveyor while developing a detailed understanding of the company’s projects, clients and commercial processes.
Responsibilities will include:
- Assisting with the commercial management of civil engineering projects
- Preparing estimates, budgets and cost plans
- Measuring works from drawings and site information
- Procuring subcontractors, suppliers and materials
- Preparing and reviewing subcontractor enquiries and quotations
- Assisting with valuations, applications for payment and payment notices
- Monitoring project costs, cash flow and profitability
- Managing variations and additional works
- Preparing monthly cost reports
- Liaising with clients, subcontractors, suppliers and site teams
- Supporting the preparation and agreement of final accounts
- Gradually taking over responsibility for the commercial management of projects
The Candidate
Applications are welcomed from candidates at trainee, graduate or intermediate level.
You should ideally have:
- A degree, HNC or HND in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management or a related construction subject
- Previous quantity surveying experience, although graduates will also be considered
- An interest in civil engineering, groundworks or infrastructure projects
- Strong numerical and analytical skills
- Good communication and organisational ability
- The confidence to work with site teams, clients and subcontractors
- A willingness to learn from an experienced Quantity Surveyor
- Good Microsoft Excel skills
- A full UK driving licence would be beneficial
The Opportunity
The salary is £28,000–£40,000, depending on qualifications and experience.
This is a long-term succession opportunity rather than simply another Assistant QS position. You will receive extensive support and knowledge transfer from the company’s existing Quantity Surveyor, with the intention of eventually taking ownership of the commercial function.
