Refuse and Recycling Driver/Loader

Job Purpose

To provide an efficient, safe and reliable refuse and recycling collection service by driving refuse collection vehicles (where appropriately licensed) and assisting with the collection, loading and disposal of household and commercial waste and recyclable materials. The post holder will work as part of a team to deliver high-quality environmental services while maintaining excellent customer service and complying with all health and safety requirements.

Key Responsibilities

• Drive refuse collection vehicles in accordance with road traffic legislation, Driver CPC requirements, and Council/company policies (where appropriately licensed).
• Carry out daily vehicle safety inspections and report any defects promptly.
• Collect household, commercial and recycling waste in accordance with designated collection rounds.
• Load waste and recycling materials safely and efficiently onto collection vehicles.
• Return bins and containers to the correct location after emptying.
• Identify and report contaminated recycling or missed collections following service procedures.
• Operate lifting mechanisms and associated equipment safely.
• Ensure all collections are completed within scheduled times while maintaining service quality.
• Provide courteous and professional customer service to residents and businesses.
• Report fly-tipping, damaged bins, hazardous waste, obstructions or environmental concerns.
• Work safely around pedestrians, traffic and members of the public.
• Assist with street cleansing or other environmental duties when required.
• Ensure vehicles and equipment are kept clean and serviceable.
• Complete required paperwork or electronic records accurately.
• Comply with all Health & Safety legislation, manual handling procedures and safe systems of work.
• Wear and maintain the appropriate PPE at all times.
• Undertake any other reasonable duties commensurate with the grade of the post.

Person Specification

Essential Experience

• Previous experience working in refuse, recycling, waste collection or environmental services.
• Experience working in a physically demanding outdoor environment.
• Experience working as part of a team.
• Experience delivering good customer service.

Essential Knowledge & Skills

• Knowledge of manual handling techniques.
• Good understanding of Health & Safety procedures.
• Ability to work efficiently to deadlines and collection schedules.
• Good communication and teamwork skills.
• Ability to work in all weather conditions.
• Reliable, punctual and flexible approach to work.

Essential Qualifications

• Full UK Driving Licence.
• HGV/LGV Category C (Class 2) Licence (for driving duties).
• Valid Driver CPC.
