Key Responsibilities & Clinical Neonatal Duties
As a Band 5 NICU Neonatal Nurse, you will be responsible for managing vulnerable, high-acuity neonates requiring Level 3 Intensive Care, Level 2 High Dependency Care, or Level 1 Special Care.
Your day-to-day duties across neonatal wards will include:
Advanced Neonatal Respiratory & Airway Management

Operating, monitoring, and troubleshooting specialized neonatal ventilators, including High-Frequency Oscillatory Ventilation (HFOV), conventional mechanical ventilation, CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure), BiPAP, and High-Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC) oxygen delivery.

Assisting with neonatal endotracheal intubation, tube fixation, airway suctioning, and administration of exogenous surfactant therapy.

Performing and interpreting neonatal capillary blood gas (CBG) and arterial blood gas (ABG) samples to continuously optimize ventilation strategies and acid-base balance.

Executing emergency neonatal resuscitation in accordance with Resuscitation Council UK Neonatal Life Support (NLS) algorithms.
Premature Infant Care & Physiological Stabilization
-
Providing specialized care for extremely low birth weight (ELBW) and very low birth weight (VLBW) premature infants (gestational age under 28 weeks).

Maintaining strict thermoregulation through incubator environment controls, humidity management, radiant warmers, and therapeutic hypothermia (cooling therapy) for hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy (HIE).

Calculating, preparing, and managing total parenteral nutrition (TPN), continuous enteral tube feeds via nasogastric (NGT) or orogastric (OGT) routes, and supporting early express human milk / lactation administration.

Monitoring vital signs continuously, including pulse oximetry, electrocardiogram (ECG), non-invasive blood pressure, and invasive central/arterial pressure monitoring.
Invasive Line Care & Neonatal Pharmacology

Care and maintenance of central vascular access devices, including Umbilical Venous Catheters (UVC), Umbilical Arterial Catheters (UAC), and Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters (PICC / long lines).

Safe double-checking, dilution, titration, and administration of high-risk neonatal medications, IV antibiotics, inotropes, sedatives, anticonvulsants, and blood products via specialized syringe drivers and infusion pumps.

Meticulous fluid balance management, blood glucose monitoring, and monitoring for neonatal sepsis, necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), and retinopathy of prematurity (ROP).
Family-Centred & Developmental Care

Implementing Family Integrated Care (FICare) principles, empowering parents to participate actively in their infant’s daily care routines.

Facilitating developmental care techniques, including skin-to-skin (Kangaroo Care), nest positioning, cue-based feeding, and stress-reduction strategies for fragile neonates.

Delivering compassionate, clear communication, emotional guidance, and bereavement support to families during critical periods.

Participating in multidisciplinary ward rounds alongside Consultant Neonatologists, Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioners (ANNPs), neonatal surgeons, and allied health professionals.
Candidate Requirements & Qualifications
To qualify for this Band 5 NICU / Neonatal Nurse role via Evolve Staffing Ltd, candidates must demonstrate:

Professional Registration: Active registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) as a Registered Children’s Nurse (RNC / RN Child) or Registered Adult Nurse (RNA / Level 1) with an accredited Neonatal Specialty Module.

Specialist Qualification: Possession of a recognized Qualified in Specialty (QIS) Neonatal Intensive Care qualification (e.g., ENB 405 or university-accredited Neonatal Care module) is highly desirable.

Clinical Experience: Minimum of 6–12 months recent post-qualification experience working within a UK NHS Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) or Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU).

Life Support Certifications: Valid Neonatal Life Support (NLS) or Paediatric Immediate Life Support (PILS) certification.

Valid Right to Work in the United Kingdom.

Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check registered on the Update Service.

Complete occupational health clearance, including full immunity against Hepatitis B, Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, and Tuberculosis.

Two satisfactory clinical references from NICU Band 6 / Band 7 sister, charge nurse, or ward manager covering the last 3 years.
