The Opportunity

Northern College is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Residential Night Officer to play a key role in supporting learners staying residentially on campus and ensuring they experience a safe, inclusive and positive residential environment.

This is a unique and rewarding opportunity to provide leadership of the residential provision during evening and overnight periods, supporting learner wellbeing, responding to welfare concerns and helping create a community where learners can thrive both academically and personally.

Working closely with curriculum, safeguarding, student services, estates and security colleagues, you will ensure residential learners are supported effectively throughout their stay. You will be responsible for maintaining high standards of residential practice, safeguarding and learner conduct, while also promoting learner participation, wellbeing and belonging through enrichment and community‑building activities.

What You’ll Be Doing

As a Residential Night Officer, you will provide visible leadership and support within the residential provision during evening and overnight hours. You will work directly with learners to create a calm, safe and welcoming residential environment, helping to ensure learners feel supported and connected throughout their stay at Northern College. The post involves evening, overnight and weekend working and requires sleeping on site as part of the role.

You will coordinate and oversee evening enrichment activities that encourage participation, social interaction and personal development, helping learners build positive relationships and become active members of the residential community. Alongside this, you will provide pastoral support, responding to wellbeing, conduct, attendance and welfare concerns in a professional and supportive manner.

You will monitor residential routines and standards, ensuring curfews, sign‑in procedures and accommodation expectations are maintained. As the designated overnight contact, you will remain on site and act as the lead decision‑maker in response to incidents, emergencies, safeguarding concerns, learner illness or welfare issues, working closely with security staff and escalating concerns where appropriate.

A key aspect of the role will involve maintaining accurate records of incidents, safeguarding concerns and residential activity, ensuring all actions are recorded and managed in accordance with College policies and procedures. You will also contribute to risk assessments, service improvement activities and the ongoing development of residential provision.

With a strong understanding of safeguarding, health and safety and learner welfare, you will be committed to maintaining a safe and inclusive residential environment. You will be organised and able to manage competing priorities effectively, ensuring records, communication and reporting are completed accurately and professionally.

You will be a proactive team player who is comfortable working independently during evening and overnight periods while collaborating closely with colleagues across the College to ensure learners receive high‑quality support.

Essential Skills, Experience and Qualifications

• Level 2 English and maths or equivalent
• Safeguarding training appropriate to working with young people and vulnerable adults, or willingness to undertake immediately.
• First Aid qualification, or willingness to work towards.
• Experience of supporting young people or adults with welfare, behaviour or wellbeing needs.
