Sales Account Manager in London, Greater London

London · Permanent
Are you a sales professional who knows the infrastructure world from the inside? Maybe you’ve sold into Network Rail, National Grid or the water sector, or you’ve moved from delivery into business development and found you’re good at it. If so, this could be your next move.
The company
Our client is a large, independently owned engineering business that’s growing fast in the UK. Its UK headcount is around 1,200 and still rising, and revenue has climbed sharply over the last three years. Its Project Management & Consulting unit was built through a series of acquisitions and now supports some of the country’s biggest rail, energy and grid programmes. Offices run from Glasgow to London.
The role
You’ll join the sales team and report to the Sales Director for Project Management & Consulting. You’ll focus mainly on PMO services and help out across other service lines when needed. A typical week looks roughly like this:
- 60% sales: finding, chasing and converting new opportunities
- 20% bids: shaping win strategies, writing and leading proposals, hitting deadlines and following governance
- 15% account management: growing existing clients and supporting senior relationships
- 5% marketing and events: making sure the business is seen at the right industry events
Your key targets will include National Grid, energy distributors, Network Rail, National Highways, public sector bodies and Tier 1 contractors and consultancies. You’ll build account plans, prospect through your network (and the phone), get the business onto approved bid lists early, and work closely with operations so what you sell can be delivered. Success is measured on sales order intake, both your own and the business unit’s.
What you’ll bring
- Around 7 years in sales and tendering within energy, transport, water or infrastructure
- Good knowledge of the supply chain and how capital projects and complex programmes are run (construction and programme exposure counts for more than transport operations)
- Recent, relevant bid experience you can talk through in detail
- Strong negotiation, presentation and contract management skills
- Confidence running meetings with senior stakeholders and closing for commitment
- A background in a tier one or tier two consultancy, engineering consultancy or contractor would suit well
- BPSS clearance is required, and SC is a bonus
They are open to mid-level people with the drive to step up, as well as more senior candidates. If you’ve come from a technical or operational role and moved into sales, we’d like to hear from you too. Project management skills, engineering or professional services qualifications, or time in a multi-discipline consultancy would also help.
Working pattern
It’s hybrid. During probation you’ll spend 2 to 3 days a week in the office getting to know people and the business. After that you can work more flexibly, even fully from home, as long as results and client visits stay on track. London suits best because key stakeholders are there, but it isn’t essential. You’ll also travel to other offices and client sites.
