The Opportunity

Spencer Ogden is supporting a leading organisation within the renewable energy and battery energy storage sector in the search for an experienced SCADA & Controls Engineer to join their EMEA Delivery team.

This is an excellent opportunity to work on utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects, with responsibility for SCADA, controls engineering, grid integration, communications, testing and project delivery across EMEA.

You will play a key role in developing and implementing SCADA and controls solutions, integrating BESS control systems with Transmission System Operator (TSO) Energy Management Systems (EMS), and ensuring projects meet technical, operational and grid compliance requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Lead the delivery of project-specific SCADA and controls requirements from design through to commissioning.

Develop controls design documentation, including system architecture, application modes, control philosophies and grid integration concepts.

Lead the integration of BESS SCADA and control systems with TSO EMS systems.

Develop control logic and control schemes for remote and local operation of BESS assets.

Translate grid-code and TSO requirements into functional specifications, control logic and SCADA/EMS solutions.

Support the development, implementation and testing of SCADA and controls applications for utility-scale energy storage projects.

Develop and maintain SCADA architectures, communication interfaces and control philosophies.

Support the implementation of grid services, including active/reactive power control, frequency regulation, voltage control and other ancillary services.

Work with power converters and inverters and understand their interaction with the transmission and distribution network.

Support solutions incorporating Grid-Forming (GFM) and Grid-Following (GFL) inverter technologies.

Develop standardised test procedures and execute FAT and SAT activities to support efficient commissioning.

Participate in hands-on laboratory, factory and site testing of SCADA and control systems.

Troubleshoot SCADA, PLC, RTU, communication and control-system issues during project delivery and commissioning.

Act as the SCADA and Controls interface with clients, TSOs, EPC contractors and subcontractors throughout tender and project execution.

Support technical compliance and ensure SCADA and control solutions meet client and grid requirements.

Develop and maintain documentation covering SCADA hardware, applications, protocols, communication links and backup/recovery strategies.

Maintain effective change-control procedures and associated technical documentation.

Key Requirements

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Controls Engineering, Automation, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Industrial Engineering or a related discipline.

Minimum 4 years' hands-on experience in SCADA, controls, automation or control-system engineering within the power, utilities, renewable energy or energy storage sector.

Proven experience delivering SCADA and controls solutions for utility-scale BESS, power generation or renewable energy projects.

Strong understanding of power-system operational requirements, grid integration and grid-code compliance.

Practical knowledge of grid services and grid-code functions, including active/reactive power control, frequency regulation, voltage control and other ancillary services.

Experience translating grid-code and TSO requirements into functional specifications, control logic and SCADA/EMS solutions.

Strong understanding of power converters and inverters used within utility-scale energy storage systems.

Knowledge of Grid-Forming (GFM) and Grid-Following (GFL) inverter technologies and their application within modern power networks.

Hands-on experience with IEC (phone number removed)-104 (IEC 104) is essential.

Strong knowledge of industrial communication protocols, including IEC (phone number removed)-101/104, IEC 61850 MMS, Modbus TCP/RTU, DNP3 and TCP/IP.

Hands-on experience with PLCs, RTUs, SCADA gateways, data concentrators and EMS interfaces.

Demonstrable experience developing, configuring and troubleshooting control logic, SCADA applications and communication interfaces.

Strong hands-on programming and controls development experience, with the ability to clearly explain programming methodology and troubleshooting approaches.

Experience with FAT, SAT, commissioning and site testing of SCADA and control systems.

Understanding of high-voltage electrical equipment, including inverters, transformers, I/O systems, telecommunications and controllers.

Strong stakeholder-management and communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to clients, TSOs, EPC contractors and internal project teams.

Strong problem-solving and solution-oriented mindset.

Fluent English is essential. German or another European language would be advantageous.

Why This Opportunity?

This is an opportunity to work remotely across EMEA on the delivery of large-scale BESS projects and advanced SCADA and controls systems.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work across grid integration, controls engineering, SCADA, EMS, power converters and energy storage, playing a key role in delivering complex projects from design through to commissioning.

If you are an experienced SCADA & Controls Engineer with strong hands-on experience across BESS, power systems, grid integration, EMS, PLCs and industrial communications, Spencer Ogden would be keen to hear from you
