An established and growing scaffolding engineering consultancy is seeking an experienced Regional Design Manager to establish and lead a new regional operation in the North. 

The business provides specialist scaffolding engineering and design solutions across major commercial, infrastructure, rail, demolition, refurbishment, industrial and decommissioning projects throughout the UK.

This is a senior opportunity offering genuine responsibility for building a regional design function, developing a team and supporting the continued growth of a well-established consultancy.

The role

You will take responsibility for establishing and developing the regional design operation, while ensuring projects are delivered safely, efficiently and to the required technical standards.

Working closely with senior management, clients, contractors and engineering teams, you will oversee multiple design projects while contributing to the wider commercial and strategic growth of the region.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Establishing and leading a new regional scaffolding design office.

• Managing and developing a team of scaffold design engineers.

• Overseeing multiple simultaneous design projects across infrastructure, commercial and industrial sectors.

• Ensuring scaffolding designs are delivered to the required safety, quality and technical standards.

• Reviewing design requirements, project specifications and client briefs.

• Coordinating with clients, contractors, external engineers and project stakeholders.

• Managing design programmes and ensuring work is delivered within agreed timescales.

• Identifying technical and project risks and implementing appropriate solutions.

• Ensuring designs consider buildability, sequencing, safety and practical site requirements.

• Monitoring design quality and maintaining consistent engineering standards.

• Reporting to senior management on project delivery, regional performance and growth.

• Supporting recruitment, onboarding, training and continued development of the regional design team.

• Providing technical guidance and mentoring to engineers across different levels of experience.

• Supporting the wider business with client relationships and the continued development of the regional operation.

About you

You will bring a strong background in scaffolding design and temporary works engineering, ideally having progressed into a Senior Design Engineer, Principal Engineer, Design Manager or similar leadership position.

You should be comfortable combining technical engineering responsibility with team leadership, client management and the commercial development of a regional operation.

You should demonstrate:

• Significant experience within scaffolding design or temporary works engineering.

• Strong knowledge of relevant British Standards, industry guidance and specialist scaffolding documentation.

• In-depth understanding of health and safety legislation relating to scaffolding and temporary works.

• Experience delivering designs for large-scale construction or infrastructure projects.

• Strong understanding of scaffold buildability, sequencing and site constraints.

• Experience using AutoCAD and other relevant engineering design software.

• Experience with 2D and/or 3D structural analysis software.

• The ability to review, check and oversee engineering designs produced by others.

• Experience managing, mentoring or developing design engineers.

• Strong commercial awareness and an understanding of project delivery requirements.

• Confident communication skills when working with clients, contractors and engineering teams.

• Chartered Engineer status, or a desire to work towards professional chartership, would be advantageous.

• The ability to work independently and take ownership of the development of a regional operation.
