About the Role
We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic, skilled and highly motivated Building Services Manager to join a friendly and supportive junior school team in Quinton, Birmingham.
This is a key role responsible for ensuring the school site is maintained to the highest standards of cleanliness, safety and security. You will oversee the day-to-day management of the premises, ensuring a safe, warm and welcoming environment for pupils, staff and visitors.
This position requires flexibility and may involve split shifts as well as occasional out-of-hours responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the overall provision of site security, cleaning, and maintenance services
- Ensure the school site is safe, secure, clean and well maintained at all times
- Open and close the school daily, including alarm operation and key management
- Act as the first point of contact for emergency call-outs
- Carry out and oversee repairs, maintenance and statutory compliance checks
- Conduct risk assessments and ensure adherence to Health & Safety regulations
- Monitor and manage contractors on site
- Maintain accurate records including fire logs and safety documentation
- Oversee cleaning standards, supplies, and equipment maintenance
- Undertake general porterage and minor repairs
- Ensure external areas, paths and grounds are kept clean and safe
- Operate heating systems and report faults promptly
- Support lettings, school events, and community use of the site where required
About You
The successful candidate will:
- Have experience working in a school or similar environment, with a strong understanding of site management responsibilities
- Have practical skills in areas such as general maintenance, plumbing, electrical work, or grounds maintenance
- Possess good organisational skills with the ability to prioritise workload effectively
- Have a strong working knowledge of Health & Safety regulations and compliance
- Be self-motivated, able to work independently and manage lone working situations
- Demonstrate a flexible, proactive and ‘can-do’ attitude
- Be confident liaising with staff, contractors and external stakeholders
- Be physically fit and able to undertake manual tasks when required
- Have good ICT skills (e.g. Word and Excel)
- Hold GCSE-level qualifications (or equivalent) in English and Mathematics
Additional Requirements
- Willingness to undertake relevant training and professional development
- Ability to respond to emergency call-outs, including evenings and weekends
- Availability to work variable hours in line with school needs (including split shifts)
- A good attendance record is essential
- A driving licence and access to a vehicle is desirable
