School Caretaker

Job Purpose

The School Caretaker is responsible for ensuring the school premises, grounds, buildings and facilities are safe, secure, clean, well maintained and fit for purpose. The post holder will play an important role in creating a safe, welcoming and positive environment for pupils, staff, visitors and contractors.

The successful candidate will be practical, reliable and approachable, with the ability to work independently and take pride in maintaining high standards across the school site.

Key Responsibilities

  • Open and close the school premises safely and securely, as required.

  • Carry out daily checks of the school buildings, grounds, equipment and facilities.

  • Ensure the school site is maintained to a high standard and is safe for pupils, staff and visitors.

  • Undertake general maintenance, repairs and minor DIY tasks, including basic plumbing, joinery, decorating and other practical work within the post holder's competence.

  • Report larger repairs, faults or maintenance issues to the appropriate person and arrange or assist with contractors where required.

  • Monitor heating, lighting, water systems, alarms and other essential building services and report faults promptly.

  • Carry out routine health and safety checks and ensure hazards are identified, reported and dealt with appropriately.

  • Assist with fire safety procedures, including regular checks of fire doors, extinguishers, emergency exits and evacuation routes.

  • Maintain the security of the premises, including monitoring access and ensuring doors, windows and gates are secure.

  • Maintain school grounds, including basic gardening, litter picking, gritting and keeping pathways clear during adverse weather.

  • Set up and clear away furniture and equipment for school events, meetings and activities.

  • Assist with deliveries and ensure goods are stored safely and appropriately.

  • Liaise professionally with contractors, suppliers and visitors attending the school site.

  • Maintain appropriate records relating to maintenance, inspections, repairs and health and safety

  • Support the school with additional reasonable duties that contribute to the effective operation of the premises.

Health and Safety

The Caretaker will be expected to take an active role in maintaining a safe school environment and to comply with all school policies and procedures relating to health and safety, safeguarding, security, fire safety and risk management.

Safeguarding

The successful applicant will be expected to demonstrate a commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. The role will be subject to the appropriate pre-employment checks, including an enhanced DBS check where required.

Working Pattern

The role may require some flexibility around working hours to meet the needs of the school, including occasional evening or weekend work for school events, emergencies or maintenance requirements.

The successful candidate will be an important member of the school team and will help ensure that the school remains a safe, secure, welcoming and well-maintained environment for everyone.
