School Cover Supervisor
Your experience outside education may be exactly what a school needs.
Local Education is recruiting confident, reliable people for Cover Supervisor roles across secondary schools in South Essex from September. These opportunities are particularly suitable for career changers who have developed strong communication, leadership and people-management skills but have not previously worked as a teacher.
Successful Cover Supervisors come from many backgrounds. We regularly speak with managers, sports coaches, youth workers, support workers, customer service professionals, performers, graduates, former emergency services personnel and people returning to work.
The common qualities are calm authority, good judgement, resilience and the ability to build respectful relationships with young people.
What is a Cover Supervisor?
When a teacher is absent, a Cover Supervisor takes responsibility for the class and ensures pupils complete work that has already been prepared. You are not normally expected to plan or mark lessons.
You will introduce the task, maintain a purposeful environment, follow the school’s behaviour procedures and report back to the relevant member of staff.
Why work with Local Education?
Local Education is an independent Essex education recruitment agency and a GCA-approved supplier. Our approval is helping us build more partnerships with schools and academy trusts for September, creating a wider range of daily, long-term and potential permanent opportunities.
We combine the reach of an approved education supplier with a personal, local service. You will not simply be sent an address and left to work things out alone.
Our support includes:
- Practical Cover Supervisor preparation
- Safeguarding and behaviour management training
- Guidance on classroom routines and professional boundaries
- School-specific induction materials where available
- Clear placement briefings and ongoing contact
- Weekly PAYE pay
- Daily supply, long-term and temp-to-permanent opportunities
- Honest feedback and career guidance
Where possible, we work with schools to prepare candidates on their specific ethos, behaviour systems and key procedures before the first day. This can include concise reminders with booking information so that you arrive knowing more about the environment you are entering.
The role may include:
- Supervising classes across a range of subjects
- Ensuring pupils understand and complete the set work
- Managing low-level disruption calmly and consistently
- Following safeguarding and reporting procedures
- Supporting pupils without taking over the teacher’s role
- Liaising with teaching, pastoral and cover staff
- Contributing positively to the wider school community
You may be a strong match if you:
- Have experience leading, coaching, supervising or supporting people
- Communicate confidently with adults and young people
- Can establish clear expectations without confrontation
- Are organised, punctual and dependable
- Want work with purpose and genuine progression potential
- Are willing to complete all required safer recruitment checks
Previous school experience is welcome but not essential. We will consider transferable experience carefully and discuss whether Cover Supervisor work is the right route for you.
For some people, this becomes flexible work around other commitments. For others, it is the first step towards teacher training, behaviour support, pastoral work or a permanent role in a school.
Apply through CV-Library today. Suitable applicants will be contacted for an initial conversation about their experience, preferred locations, availability and the training available before September.
