TeacherActive is currently seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Science Teacher to join a specialist school in Epsom, Surrey, starting in September.
This specialist setting supports young people aged 11–18 with autism and additional learning needs. Pupils benefit from small teaching groups, personalised learning programmes and a supportive environment designed to help them develop academically, socially and emotionally.
As a Science Teacher, you will plan and deliver engaging lessons across Biology, Chemistry and Physics, adapting your teaching to meet the individual needs and abilities of each pupil. You will support students working towards appropriate qualifications, including GCSE Science where suitable, while ensuring learning remains accessible, practical and meaningful.
You will create a structured and supportive classroom environment where pupils feel confident engaging with Science. A flexible and patient approach will be essential, particularly when supporting young people who may experience communication difficulties, sensory processing differences, anxiety or challenges with changes to routines.
Working closely with teaching assistants, support staff, therapists and other professionals, you will contribute to personalised learning programmes and pupils’ EHCP outcomes. You will monitor progress, identify areas for development and adapt your teaching to ensure every pupil has the opportunity to achieve their potential.
The successful Science Teacher will have:
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) – essential
- Strong subject knowledge across Biology, Chemistry and Physics
- Experience teaching Science at secondary level
- The ability to teach Combined Science, including GCSE-level content where appropriate
- The ability to plan engaging, practical and differentiated Science lessons
- Experience working with pupils with autism/ASC or SEND is highly desirable
- An understanding of different communication, sensory and learning needs
- A patient, flexible and supportive approach to teaching
- Confidence adapting teaching to individual pupils and different levels of ability
- The ability to establish clear routines and a calm, structured classroom environment
- An understanding of EHCPs and personalised learning
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- A strong understanding of safeguarding and pupil wellbeing
- The ability to build positive and trusting relationships with pupils and colleagues
Key Responsibilities:
- Teach Science to pupils aged 11–18
- Plan and deliver engaging lessons across Biology, Chemistry and Physics
- Deliver GCSE Science content where appropriate
- Differentiate lessons according to pupils’ individual learning needs and abilities
- Provide practical and accessible opportunities for pupils to develop their scientific knowledge
- Assess, monitor and record pupil progress
- Support individual targets and EHCP outcomes
- Create a calm, structured and positive learning environment
- Support pupils with communication, sensory and emotional regulation needs within lessons
- Encourage pupils to develop confidence, curiosity and independence
- Work collaboratively with teaching assistants, therapists and other professionals
- Maintain high expectations while recognising and celebrating individual progress
- Follow safeguarding procedures and prioritise the wellbeing of every pupil
