SEN Teaching Assistant – Autism Support
Location: Sutton, London, SM1
Pay: £90–£100 per day
Contract: Full-time, long-term temporary
Start date: 1 September 2026
Salary is dependent on experience and qualifications. Higher rates are available for candidates with extensive experience and relevant training. Pay is determined in line with Agency Worker Regulations (AWR), where applicable.

Transparency Education is recruiting a committed and experienced SEN Teaching Assistant to support pupils with autism spectrum disorder in a welcoming school in Sutton.

This is an excellent long-term opportunity for someone who understands that successful autism support is built around consistency, patience and positive relationships. You will work closely with class teachers and the school’s SEN team to help pupils participate in lessons, develop their communication skills and become increasingly independent.

The position may involve supporting an individual pupil or working with a small group across EYFS, Key Stage 1 or Key Stage 2.

The role
As an SEN Teaching Assistant, you will:

• Provide structured one-to-one and small-group support for pupils with autism.
• Help pupils access classroom activities and differentiated learning tasks.
• Follow individual education plans, behaviour support strategies and sensory programmes.
• Support communication using appropriate visual resources, routines or alternative communication methods.
• Encourage social interaction, emotional regulation and independence.
• Observe pupil progress and share relevant feedback with teachers and the SENCO.
• Support pupils during transitions, breaktimes and wider school activities.
• Maintain a calm, safe and inclusive learning environment.
• Follow all safeguarding, confidentiality and school policies.

About you
We would like to hear from candidates who:

• Have previous experience supporting children or young people with autism or additional needs.
• Understand the importance of routines, clear communication and consistent boundaries.
• Can remain calm and reassuring when pupils experience anxiety or sensory overload.
• Are patient, reliable and able to build trusting relationships.
• Work well as part of a multidisciplinary school team.
• Have strong spoken and written English.
• Are willing to assist with personal care where required.
• Hold a relevant teaching assistant, childcare or SEN qualification, although strong experience will also be considered.
• Experience using visual timetables, PECS, Makaton, Attention Autism, sensory strategies or positive behaviour support would be particularly valuable.
