Balfor Recruitment is currently recruiting for an experienced SEN Teaching Assistant to join a supportive primary school in  Castle Bromwich,  Birmingham.

This is a full-time, Monday to Friday position, working from 8:30am to 3:30pm. The role is ongoing and requires someone who can commit to the full working week.

You will be working closely with pupils who are non-verbal and may display challenging behaviours, therefore the successful candidate must have previous experience supporting children with complex SEN needs and be confident providing consistent, patient and nurturing support.

You will work alongside the class teacher and wider SEN team to support pupils with their learning, communication, behaviour, personal care and emotional wellbeing.

The successful candidate will need to be calm, resilient and able to build strong, trusting relationships with pupils while maintaining clear and consistent boundaries.

Personal care is an essential part of this role.

Key Responsibilities

As an SEN Teaching Assistant, you will be responsible for:

  • Providing dedicated 1:1 and small-group support to pupils with complex SEN needs.
  • Supporting non-verbal pupils with communication and engagement.
  • Supporting pupils who display challenging behaviours, using positive and consistent behaviour-support strategies.
  • Following individual behaviour, communication and support plans.
  • Adapting learning resources to meet individual needs.
  • Developing positive, trusting relationships with pupils.
  • Supporting pupils with their emotional regulation and wellbeing.
  • Providing personal care, including supporting pupils with hygiene and toileting where required.
  • Encouraging independence and developing pupils' life skills.
  • Working closely with the class teacher, SENCO and wider support team.
  • Monitoring pupils' progress, behaviour and engagement and providing feedback to teaching staff.
  • Maintaining a calm, safe and structured learning environment.

Essential Requirements – Please Read Carefully

The following requirements are essential for this position:

  • Level 3 qualification in Teaching and Learning – essential. No equivalent qualifications will be accepted.
  • Minimum of 6 months' UK experience working within a school or education setting – essential.
  • Previous experience working with SEN pupils – essential.
  • Experience supporting non-verbal pupils – essential.
  • Experience supporting pupils with challenging behaviours – essential.
  • Experience and confidence providing personal care – essential.
  • A patient, caring and nurturing approach.
  • The ability to remain calm and consistent when managing challenging situations.

Desirable Experience & Qualifications

The following would be highly desirable:

  • Team Teach trained.
  • Paediatric First Aid experience/qualification.
  • Experience using Makaton or other alternative communication methods.

Due to the specific needs of the pupils and requirements of the school, candidates who do not hold a Level 3 Teaching and Learning qualification, do not have at least 6 months' UK school/education experience, do not have experience supporting non-verbal pupils and challenging behaviours, or do not have personal care experience will not meet the requirements for this position.

Candidates must also be able to commit to the full-time Monday to Friday working pattern of 8:30am – 3:30pm.
