About the Role
Long Term Futures are working with an inclusive primary school in Hackney to recruit an experienced SEN Teaching Assistant to support non-verbal pupils with Autism Spectrum Disorder across Early Years and Key Stage 1.
This is a specialist support role requiring someone who is confident working with children with more complex communication and developmental needs. You will provide highly individualised support, helping pupils communicate their needs, engage with learning and develop greater independence.
Key responsibilities include:
- Providing 1:1 and small group support for non-verbal pupils with autism
- Supporting children across Early Years and Key Stage 1
- Using visual communication strategies such as PECS, visual timetables and now-and-next boards
- Supporting speech, language and communication development
- Helping pupils with emotional regulation and sensory needs
- Supporting transitions, routines and changes throughout the school day
- Encouraging interaction, play and engagement with other children
- Working closely with the SENCO, teachers and specialist professionals
The Ideal Candidate
The school is particularly interested in candidates who:
- Have strong experience supporting children with autism
- Have worked with non-verbal or minimally verbal children
- Understand alternative communication strategies
- Are calm, patient and confident supporting more complex needs
- Can build trusting relationships with young children
- Are proactive and comfortable working within a highly structured SEN environment
Experience with PECS, Makaton, Attention Autism or similar approaches would be highly desirable.
