SEN Teaching Assistant

Specialist SEN School - Blackburn - Up to £600 per week - Full-time

Are you looking for a rewarding role supporting children and young people with a wide variety of Special Educational Needs (SEN)?

Would you like to work in a specialist environment where you can develop experience with everything from Autism and SEMH to complex learning difficulties and PMLD?

A specialist SEN school in Blackburn is seeking a caring and adaptable SEN Teaching Assistant to join its established team. The school supports pupils with significantly different levels of need, providing a varied role where no two pupils - or days - are exactly the same.

The Role - SEN Teaching Assistant

As an SEN Teaching Assistant, you will provide personalised support to pupils with needs including Autism, ADHD, SEMH, MLD, SLD, PMLD, physical disabilities, and speech and communication difficulties.

Support will be guided by each pupil's individual needs and EHCP, with responsibilities potentially including:

  • Providing targeted 1:1 and small-group support
  • Helping pupils access differentiated classroom activities
  • Supporting communication and social interaction
  • Using sensory, visual, and alternative communication strategies
  • Helping pupils manage emotions and regulate behaviour
  • Developing independence, confidence, and essential life skills
  • Supporting pupils with physical and complex needs where required
  • Working alongside teachers and other SEN professionals to monitor progress

The diversity of the school makes this an excellent opportunity to develop a broad understanding of specialist education. You could be helping one pupil regulate their emotions and re-engage with a lesson before supporting another pupil with profound learning difficulties through a sensory or communication-based activity.

What's on Offer

  • Up to £600 per week
  • Full-time, long-term SEN Teaching Assistant position
  • September start
  • Exposure to a wide variety of additional needs
  • Extensive SEN training and ongoing CPD
  • Support from experienced specialist professionals
  • Valuable experience for careers in Psychology, Occupational Therapy, Speech & Language Therapy, Social Work, Healthcare, or SEN Education

Who Are We Looking For?

Previous experience in SEN or specialist education would be highly advantageous, particularly experience supporting Autism, SEMH, learning disabilities, complex needs, or PMLD.

Candidates from care, support work, residential care, youth work, and other people-focused backgrounds are also encouraged to apply, alongside Psychology and related graduates looking to develop specialist experience.
