SEN Teaching Assistant – Year 3, Barnet

Salary: £93–£100 per day
Contract: Full-time, long-term temporary
Location: Barnet, London
Start date: Immediate – September 2026

Are you an experienced SEN Teaching Assistant with strong knowledge of autism, AAC and sensory regulation? A supportive primary school in Barnet is seeking a calm and consistent professional to provide dedicated 1:1 support for an academically capable Year 3 pupil who is currently preverbal.

The Role

As the pupils SEN Teaching Assistant, you will initially focus on rebuilding trust and establishing the predictable routines he needs to feel secure:

Relationship → Regulation → Routine → Reintegration → Learning

The pupil has good receptive understanding and currently accesses work at approximately Year 2 level. He uses a paper-based communication system, and the school is preparing to introduce an electronic AAC device.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Building a positive and trusting 1:1 relationship
• Supporting communication through AAC, PECS or picture-based systems
• Encouraging a successful transition to an electronic AAC device
• Using visual timetables, now-and-next boards and sensory breaks
• Identifying triggers and early signs of dysregulation
• Supporting transitions and unexpected changes to routine
• Gradually helping him reintegrate into the classroom
• Supporting learning at an appropriate academic level
• Working closely with the class teacher, SENCO and wider support team

About You

This is not a generic SEN Teaching Assistant position. The school is particularly interested in candidates with:

• Strong 1:1 ASD experience
• Experience with preverbal or minimally speaking pupils
• Practical knowledge of AAC, PECS or communication boards
• Confidence supporting sensory and emotional regulation
• Experience supporting pupils who may run when dysregulated
• A calm, patient and consistent approach
• Strong relationship-building and observation skills
• The alertness to respond quickly and proactively
• An enhanced DBS on the Update Service, or willingness to obtain one
