About the Role
A specialist SEN school in Thetford (IP24) is seeking a dedicated and resilient SEMH Teaching Assistant to join their team from September. This is a rewarding opportunity to support pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs within a structured and nurturing educational environment.
You will work closely with teachers and the wider pastoral team to help pupils overcome barriers to learning, develop positive relationships, and achieve their full potential. The role is ideal for someone who is calm, patient, and confident supporting children with behavioural and emotional needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide 1:1 and small group support for pupils with SEMH needs
- Build positive, professional relationships that promote trust and engagement
- Support pupils to regulate their emotions and manage behaviour positively
- Assist in delivering personalised learning and behaviour support plans
- Encourage participation in classroom activities and promote independence
- Work collaboratively with teachers, pastoral staff, and external professionals
- Record pupil progress and contribute to behaviour and learning reviews
- Promote a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment
What We’re Looking For
Essential:
- Experience working with children or young people with SEMH, behavioural needs, or additional needs
- Strong behaviour management and de-escalation skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Patient, resilient, and proactive approach
- Ability to build positive relationships while maintaining professional boundaries
- Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to obtain one)
- Right to Work in the UK
Desirable:
- Experience within an SEN school, alternative provision, or specialist setting
- Knowledge of trauma-informed practice and positive behaviour support strategies
- Team Teach or equivalent behaviour management training
- Background in education, youth work, care, or children's residential services
