SEN Tutor – Autism & PDA Specialist
Study Mind · Direct employer
Location: Home-Based Tuition – Bromsgrove, Worcestershire (B61)
Hours: Initially 1 hour per week, with planned progression towards a larger package (up to 15 hours per week)
Start Date: September 2026
About the Role
Study Mind is seeking an experienced Female SEN Tutor with a strong background supporting young people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) and Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA).
You'll initially deliver 1 hour of Maths tuition per week, focusing entirely on relationship building before gradually increasing hours and introducing English and Science as the student becomes more comfortable.
About the Student
Our student is an academically able Year 7 learner with an EHCP who has been out of school due to severe anxiety linked to Autism and a PDA profile. She enjoys learning but requires a highly individualised, low-demand approach where trust comes before academic progress.
The Role Will Include
- Delivering 1:1 face-to-face tuition in the student's home.
- Initially teaching Maths before expanding into English and Science.
- Building a trusting relationship before increasing academic expectations.
- Delivering flexible, low-demand lessons tailored to the student's presentation each day.
- Supporting emotional regulation through predictable routines and sensory-aware teaching.
- Working closely with parents to support a gradual return to learning.
Ideal Tutor Experience
We're looking for someone with experience supporting:
- Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
- PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance).
- Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA).
- Anxiety, masking and sensory processing differences.
- Key Stage 3 Maths (English and Science experience desirable).
- Home tuition or EOTAS provision.
Student Interests
Using the student's interests will be key to building rapport. She enjoys reading, Minecraft, jigsaw puzzles, arts and crafts, board games, guinea pigs and YouTube videos based around her interests.
Learning Approach
The successful tutor will:
- Use a calm, flexible and relationship-led approach.
- Build confidence before introducing challenge.
- Adapt learning around the student's interests.
- Use visual supports, routines and movement breaks.
- Recognise signs of overwhelm and reduce demands accordingly.
- Be patient and allow rapport to develop naturally.
Important Requirements
- Female tutor required.
- Extensive Autism and PDA experience is essential.
- Sessions must take place at a consistent agreed time each week.
- Tutor must be happy to provide a short biography and photograph before starting to help the student become familiar with them.
- Ideally vegetarian or vegan, or comfortable working sensitively around the student's significant food-related anxieties by avoiding discussions involving meat, fish or eggs during sessions.
