SEND Specialist Tutor (SEMH & Complex Needs - Year 11)

Prospero Teaching is working in partnership with local SEND teams and schools across the North East to recruit a dedicated Specialist SEND Tutor to support a Year 11 student with complex Special Educational Needs (SEN) in South Tyneside.

This role would suit an experienced and compassionate tutor or education professional who is passionate about building positive relationships, re-engaging young people with education, and supporting students with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs on a 1:1 basis.

The main focus of the role will be to:

  • Build a trusting and positive relationship with the student.
  • Re-engage them with learning and education.
  • Provide a calm, safe and supportive learning environment.
  • Support emotional wellbeing and develop confidence.
  • Establish positive routines and encourage consistent engagement.
  • Help the student prepare for their next steps beyond Year 11.
  • Adapt sessions and approaches to meet the student's individual needs.
  • Complete weekly reports documenting engagement, progress and wellbeing

Contract/Position Details:

  • Location - South Tyneside
    * Position - SEND Specialist Tutor (SEMH & Complex Needs)
    * Type of work - Contract
    * Start date - ASAP
    * Setting - Student's home or local community setting (e.g. learning hub/library)
    * Duration - Ongoing, until a suitable school placement is secured
    * Contract type - Temporary
    * Hours - 15 hours per week
    * Rate of pay - up to £30 per hour (negotiable)

    * Deliver tailored, engagement-focused sessions that meet the needs of a Year 11 learner
    * Support the student's SEMH development, helping them regulate emotions and build resilience
    * Provide guidance and structure during a key stage in their education and transition planning
    * Promote confidence, independence, and life skills through structured activities
    * Create a calm, consistent, and safe learning environment
    * Monitor and assess progress, providing clear feedback to families and professionals
    * Maintain accurate records of attendance and complete weekly reports

Experience, Training and Qualifications of the SEND Specialist Tutor:

  • Children-related or Education-based qualification
    * Experience working with students with complex SEND and SEMH needs
    * Background in teaching, tutoring, or support work
    * Patient, resilient, and creative approach to learning
    * Ability to think outside the box and adapt sessions to maintain engagement
