Primary SENCO

About the role

Academics is seeking an experienced Primary SENCO to support a primary school in Greenwich, providing specialist SEND leadership, guidance and quality assurance one day per week during term time.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced SENCO looking for a flexible, part-time position where they can make a meaningful impact on SEND provision, support colleagues and help ensure pupils with additional needs receive the right support.

Working alongside the school's existing SEND team, you will provide strategic oversight of complex casework, strengthen statutory processes and coach phase SEND leads to develop their confidence and expertise.

The school already has established SEND systems and dedicated colleagues managing day-to-day provision. Your role will focus on specialist leadership, complex cases, staff development and ensuring provision meets pupils' needs.

Key responsibilities

  • Oversee complex SEND casework, including EHCP applications, annual reviews, referrals, statutory deadlines and the quality of supporting evidence.

  • Lead focused case discussions and contribute to complex professional and multi-agency meetings.

  • Coach and mentor phase SEND leads, supporting their professional development and confidence in managing casework and leading meetings.

  • Quality-assure pupil support plans, provision and interventions, ensuring external-agency recommendations are implemented effectively.

  • Provide specialist input into communication with families where additional expertise is required.

  • Monitor actions, responsibilities and review dates, escalating significant concerns promptly.

  • Work collaboratively with the existing SEND team to strengthen processes and maintain effective, consistent SEND provision.

  • Agree a practical weekly schedule covering on-site support, priority meetings and staff coaching.

The ideal candidate

  • Has proven experience as a SENCO within a primary school setting.

  • Holds Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

  • Holds the relevant SENCO qualification or has appropriate SENCO training and experience.

  • Has a strong understanding of SEND legislation, statutory guidance and EHCP processes.

  • Is confident managing complex cases, annual reviews and multi-agency working.

  • Can provide effective guidance, coaching and professional development to colleagues.

  • Has excellent organisational, communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Can commit to consistent weekly support during term time.
