Job Title: SEND & Inclusion Learning Support Trainer
Department: Short Course / Pre-Employment Training
Reports To: Training Manager
Location: Various training centres and employer sites (as applicable)
Contract: Full-time / Part-time / Fixed-term (as required)
1. Purpose of the Role
To provide tailored learning and inclusion support for adult learners (19+) enrolled on short pre-employment training courses. The role ensures that learners with SEND, ESOL needs, low-level English/maths, mental health challenges, or wider socioeconomic barriers receive the support required to fully engage, progress, and succeed.
2. Key Responsibilities
Learner Support
- Provide 1:1 and small-group support during classroom and practical sessions.
- Assist learners who have additional learning needs (e.g., dyslexia, ADHD, autism, mild learning difficulties).
- Support learners with low reading, writing, numeracy, or digital skills.
- Help ESOL learners with understanding instructions, terminology, and tasks.
- Promote learner wellbeing and confidence-building.
Teaching & Learning Support
- Adapt, simplify, or scaffold learning materials under guidance from tutors.
- Support differentiation during lessons.
- Help learners’ complete written tasks, assessments, and workbook evidence where appropriate.
- Reinforce key learning points and break down complex activities.
SEND / Inclusion Duties
- Support initial screening and ongoing assessment of support needs.
- Implement reasonable adjustments.
- Maintain accurate records of learner support, interventions, and progress.
- Support tutors with behaviour management, engagement strategies, and inclusion techniques.
Pastoral Support
- Build positive, supportive relationships with learners.
- Signpost learners to external support services (financial, mental health, housing, etc.) where appropriate.
- Support tutors with attendance follow-up and learner engagement activities.
General
- Work professionally with sensitive information.
- Uphold safeguarding, Prevent, and health & safety policies.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of the pre-employment delivery model.
3. Skills, Experience & Qualifications
Essential
- Experience supporting adults or young people with SEND or additional learning needs.
- Strong communication, patience, and empathy.
- Ability to simplify tasks and provide clarity to learners with low confidence.
- Good literacy and numeracy skills.
- Ability to build rapport with diverse learners.
Desirable
- Experience in an independent training provider or adult education setting.
- Understanding of barriers faced by adults in pre-employment training.
- Understanding of ESFA compliance relating to learner support.
- Knowledge of mental health first aid or trauma-informed practice.
- Experience supporting ESOL learners.
- Level 2 or 3 qualification in Learning Support / SEND / Teaching Assistant or willingness to work towards.
