Quantum Scholars are looking for a patient, supportive and experienced SEND Science Tutor to provide personalised one-to-one tuition to young people in Wokingham.
The successful tutor will have strong Science subject knowledge and experience supporting secondary-aged learners with SEND. You will be confident adapting your teaching style, pace, resources and explanations to meet individual needs, while helping learners build confidence, engagement and positive attitudes towards Science.
Experience supporting young people with SEMH needs, anxiety, school avoidance, disengagement or challenging behaviour would be highly desirable. The ability to create a calm, structured and supportive learning environment will be essential.
This is an in-person tutoring role and is not online work.
The role may involve:
- Providing personalised one-to-one Science tuition to secondary-aged learners.
- Supporting young people with SEND and/or additional learning needs.
- Supporting Biology, Chemistry and Physics according to the learner's age, ability and individual needs.
- Adapting Science lessons, resources and teaching approaches to suit individual learners.
- Breaking complex scientific concepts into manageable and accessible steps.
- Identifying gaps in knowledge and providing targeted support.
- Supporting learners across the secondary Science curriculum, including GCSE where appropriate.
- Developing confidence with scientific knowledge, terminology and application.
- Using engaging activities and the learner's interests to encourage participation.
- Supporting learners who may experience anxiety, school avoidance or disengagement.
- Creating a calm, structured and positive learning environment.
- Supporting learners who may display challenging behaviour where appropriate.
- Using positive behaviour strategies and appropriate de-escalation approaches when required.
- Developing confidence, independence and resilience.
- Monitoring progress and providing appropriate feedback.
- Building positive and trusting relationships with learners.
- Working collaboratively with parents/carers and other professionals involved in the learner's support.
- Maintaining professional boundaries and confidentiality.
- Following safeguarding procedures and promoting the welfare of the young person.
Essential requirements:
- Strong Science subject knowledge at secondary level.
- Experience teaching or tutoring Science.
- Experience working with secondary-aged children or young people with SEND.
- Experience providing one-to-one support is desirable.
- Ability to adapt teaching approaches to meet individual SEND needs.
- Experience supporting learners who may have barriers to mainstream education.
- SEMH experience would be highly desirable.
- Experience supporting challenging behaviour would be beneficial.
- A patient, calm, flexible and empathetic approach.
- Ability to build trusting and respectful relationships with young people.
- Experience supporting learners who may be reluctant, anxious or disengaged from education.
- Strong communication and organisational skills.
- Ability to maintain clear professional boundaries.
- Reliable and consistent approach to work.
- Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
- Enhanced DBS check and satisfactory references.
