Special Needs and SEMH Teaching Assistant

We are seeking a dedicated, compassionate, and flexible Teaching Assistant to join a welcoming special school in Chesterfield. This is a rewarding opportunity to support children with a range of additional needs and make a positive impact on their educational journey.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support pupils across a wide age range, from Year 1 through to Year 9.
  • Work with children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, and physical disabilities.
  • Provide support within whole-class settings, small groups, and on a 1:1 basis where required.
  • Build positive, trusting relationships with pupils to promote engagement, confidence, and emotional wellbeing.
  • Adapt your approach to meet the individual needs of each child, demonstrating flexibility throughout the school day.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, teaching assistants, therapists, and other professionals to achieve the best possible outcomes for pupils.
  • Support pupils with their learning, social development, communication, and independence.
  • Help create a safe, nurturing, and inclusive learning environment where every child can thrive.

The Ideal Candidate

The successful candidate will:

  • Have experience working with children with SEND and SEMH needs.
  • Be confident in building strong, positive relationships with children from a range of backgrounds and abilities.
  • Be patient, resilient, and empathetic, with a genuine passion for supporting children with additional needs.
  • Be flexible and able to adapt to the changing needs of the school and pupils.
  • Have experience supporting children with physical needs or be willing to learn.
  • Be an effective team player who works well alongside colleagues and contributes positively to the wider school community.
  • Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Be committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
