Senior Accountant/Assistant Manager

About the Role
We are looking for an experienced and proactive Senior Accountant to join our growing accountancy practice. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys building strong client relationships, mentoring colleagues, and managing a varied portfolio of SME clients in a fast-paced practice environment.
You will take ownership of a diverse client portfolio, providing high-quality accounting and advisory services while acting as a trusted point of contact for clients. Working closely with partners and the wider team, you will also play a key role in supporting and developing junior members of staff.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage a portfolio of SME clients across a range of industries.
- Act as the primary day-to-day contact for clients, providing practical advice and responsive support.
- Prepare and review year-end accounts, management accounts, VAT returns, and other statutory filings.
- Assist clients with bookkeeping, cloud accounting, and financial reporting.
- Review work completed by junior team members, ensuring accuracy and compliance.
- Mentor, train, and support junior staff, encouraging their technical and professional development.
- Build and maintain strong client relationships through regular communication.
- Identify opportunities to improve client processes and add value through advisory services.
- Liaise with HMRC and other third parties on behalf of clients where required.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues to ensure deadlines are met and exceptional client service is delivered.
About You
The successful candidate will be:
- ACA or ACCA qualified (or qualified by experience with significant practice experience).
- Experienced in managing a portfolio of SME clients within an accountancy practice.
- Highly proficient in Xero and confident using Microsoft Excel.
- Technically strong with excellent knowledge of UK accounting principles and tax compliance.
- An effective communicator with the ability to build lasting client relationships.
- Organised, proactive, and able to manage multiple priorities in a busy practice environment.
- A supportive mentor who enjoys coaching and developing junior colleagues.
- Commercially aware, with a client-focused approach and a commitment to delivering high-quality service.
Desirable Skills
- Experience with additional cloud accounting software such as Hubdoc, QuickBooks, or Sage.
- Experience preparing management accounts and providing business advisory support.
- Strong problem-solving skills with a continuous improvement mindset.
