An opportunity has arisen for a Senior Electrical Technician to join a world-leading scientific and advanced engineering organisation operating one of Europe's most sophisticated large-scale research facilities.

The organisation develops and operates highly complex electrical, RF, control, instrumentation and accelerator systems that support cutting-edge scientific research across engineering, materials science, life sciences, environmental science and advanced manufacturing. With a major multi-million-pound upgrade programme underway, this is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the development and operation of one of the UK's most technically advanced engineering facilities.

This is a hands-on senior technical role supporting the installation, commissioning, maintenance and continuous improvement of complex electrical and control systems. Working closely with project engineers, technical specialists and external contractors, you will supervise electrical activities, support major upgrade programmes and ensure the reliable operation of critical accelerator infrastructure.

This role would suit an experienced Electrical Technician, Senior Electrical Technician, Electrical Maintenance Engineer or Controls Technician looking to work on technically challenging systems within a highly collaborative engineering environment.

Main Responsibilities of the Senior Electrical Technician(Didcot):

  • Support major upgrade projects across complex electrical, control and instrumentation systems
  • Carry out inspection, testing and maintenance of electrical systems supporting high-technology engineering equipment
  • Assist with the design, manufacture, installation and commissioning of new electrical systems and infrastructure
  • Support maintenance and upgrade activities for RF, instrumentation, diagnostics and vacuum systems
  • Supervise the build, installation and testing of electrical panels, control racks and associated equipment
  • Conduct factory acceptance testing (FAT), site acceptance testing (SAT) and commissioning activities
  • Supervise contractors and external suppliers, including permits to work and project coordination
  • Line manage and mentor technicians and apprentices within the engineering team
  • Analyse equipment failures and contribute to maintenance planning and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Update electrical drawings, documentation and asset records to reflect installed systems
  • Procure electrical components, equipment and workshop materials as required
  • Ensure compliance with electrical safety legislation, quality standards and engineering best practice

Requirements of the Senior Electrical Technician (Didcot):

  • Proven experience within Electrical Engineering, Electrical Maintenance, Controls Engineering or Electrical Installation in a complex engineering environment
  • Experience working on industrial electrical systems, control systems or instrumentation equipment
  • Strong understanding of electrical testing, fault finding and commissioning activities
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams and engineering documentation
  • Experience supervising electrical installations, contractors or technical teams
  • Strong fault diagnosis and problem-solving skills
  • Experience maintaining accurate engineering documentation and records
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills with the ability to work across multidisciplinary engineering teams

Experience within one or more of the following technologies would be advantageous:

  • Electrical control systems
  • Instrumentation systems
  • PLC-controlled equipment
  • Industrial automation
  • RF systems
  • High-voltage or low-voltage distribution systems
  • Vacuum systems
  • Scientific research facilities
  • Large-scale industrial plant
  • Complex electrical infrastructure

Desirable:

  • HNC, HND or equivalent qualification in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline
  • Previous experience within scientific research, particle accelerators, advanced manufacturing or highly regulated engineering environments
  • Experience supervising technicians, apprentices or contractors
  • Knowledge of electrical inspection and testing regulations
  • Experience supporting large capital engineering projects
  • Familiarity with electrical CAD documentation and engineering change processes
