Senior Electronics Engineer

Do you want to work on highly engineered products where electronics, precision mechanics, control systems and fluidics all have to work together?
Do you enjoy getting into the detail of a circuit and figuring out why something isn't behaving as it should?

We're working with an established technology business developing complex, high-precision electro-mechanical systems as they look to appoint a Senior Electronics Engineer to join their R&D team.

You'll be working across analogue and high-speed digital design, PCB development, FPGA and embedded systems, with plenty of opportunity to get involved in the detail rather than simply handing designs over to someone else. The team is working on a new product as well as continuing to develop and improve existing systems. You'll have ownership of designs through development and into production, whilst also supporting with essential functions such as component management, databases and maintaining robust product documentation.

There's also some interesting FPGA work in the mix, including relatively complex devices and image manipulation. Xilinx experience would be a significant advantage, although it isn't essential. If this is an area you'd like to develop, there's the opportunity to do that here.

You'll be working closely with an existing embedded team, so you don't need to be an embedded software specialist. What matters is having a strong understanding of electronics and being able to work comfortably across the boundaries between hardware, FPGA, embedded and system-level engineering.

What You'll Bring:
  • Around 5+ years' experience in electronics design, although exceptional engineers with less experience will be considered
  • Strong analogue electronics knowledge, with the ability to look at a circuit and understand what's happening at component and system level
  • Good experience with high-speed digital signals and the practical challenges they create on a PCB
  • Experience designing, developing and troubleshooting PCBs
  • A strong understanding of hardware development beyond the prototype stage, with experience taking designs through development and towards production
  • Experience with FPGA design would be highly valuable, particularly with Xilinx devices
  • Experience working with complex digital devices and/or image processing would be advantageous
  • An understanding of embedded systems and how hardware interacts with embedded software
  • Experience designing for UK and/or US mains voltages would be a strong advantage
  • Comfortable taking ownership of a design and seeing it through, rather than only contributing to one part of the development process

Also Valued:
  • Experience in a smaller company or R&D environment where engineers have real ownership of their work
  • A practical, first-principles approach to debugging hardware
  • Someone who enjoys getting hands-on with circuits, PCBs, test equipment and prototypes
  • Experience modifying and improving existing products as well as developing new designs
You don't need to come from a particular industry. In fact, they're deliberately open to engineers from different backgrounds. What's important is the depth of your electronics knowledge, your ability to solve problems and your willingness to take ownership of a design.

This would suit someone who wants to take genuine responsibility for the electronics, from understanding the circuit at component level through to getting the finished product into production, rather than someone looking for a purely conceptual or management-focused role.

There's no management requirement here, although there's scope to develop in that direction over time.
