Senior Engineer Structures

Our client is seeking a Senior Engineer (Structures) to support the delivery and maintenance of highway structures across the Bournemouth area. This contract role will focus on road bridges, footbridges, culverts, subways, retaining walls and gantries, combining asset management, structural engineering design and project delivery. The role is offered on a hybrid basis, with a minimum of one day per week in Bournemouth.
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver planned maintenance and improvement programmes for a range of highway structures
- Design and support highway structures schemes through all project lifecycle stages, from concept to construction
- Prepare and review design drawings, specifications, tender documentation and pre-construction information
- Undertake visual, general and principal inspections, using site information, desktop studies and asset management software
- Develop planned programmes based on asset management priorities and structural condition
- Manage contracts, project performance, cost, quality and compliance with technical standards and legal obligations
- Supervise site-specific contract delivery teams and coordinate consultants, contractors and technical staff
- Promote innovation in highway structures, engineering and asset management
Job Requirements:
- Substantial experience in highway structures, structural engineering design, construction or maintenance
- Strong knowledge of bridges, culverts, retaining walls, subways, gantries and related highway assets
- Advanced understanding of relevant regulations, legislation, technical standards and engineering processes
- Experience in contract and project management, including cost control, quality assurance and financial monitoring
- Extensive knowledge of health and safety legislation relating to structures, engineering, construction, maintenance and repairs
- Ability to plan and manage projects and programmes involving colleagues, consultants and contractors
- Proactive, solution-focused approach with strong communication, influencing and stakeholder management skills
- Ability to manage competing priorities and provide effective direction over the course of a project
- Ability to travel for site visits using public transport where viable, or a valid UK driving licence with access to a suitable vehicle
Working Arrangements:
- Contract position
- Typical working hours of 37 per week
- Hybrid working with a minimum of one day per week in the offices.
- Planned start date of 5 October 2026
