Senior Java Developer
Location: Hybrid (Newcastle or Edinburgh - 1 day per month)
Salary: £75,000 per annum
Type: Permanent, Full-Time
We are looking for an experienced Senior Java Developer to join a growing technology consultancy delivering innovative digital solutions for a diverse portfolio of clients.
This is an excellent opportunity for a talented engineer who enjoys working across a variety of projects, partnering directly with clients, and helping organisations solve complex business challenges through technology. You'll play a key role in designing and delivering scalable, high-quality software solutions while collaborating with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
To be successful in this role, you must be within a commutable distance of either Newcastle or Edinburgh, with office attendance required approximately once per month.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop and maintain enterprise-scale Java applications.
- Collaborate directly with clients to understand requirements and translate business needs into technical solutions.
- Contribute to solution design and technical architecture discussions.
- Develop clean, maintainable and performant code.
- Work within Agile delivery teams to deliver high-quality software solutions.
- Conduct code reviews and support best practice development standards.
- Mentor junior and mid-level developers.
- Collaborate with Product Owners, Business Analysts, QA Engineers and DevOps teams.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives across development processes and tooling.
- Stay current with emerging technologies and identify opportunities to enhance client solutions.
- Strong commercial experience developing applications using Java.
- Experience with modern Java frameworks including:
- Spring Boot
- Spring Framework
- Hibernate / JPA
- Experience designing and building RESTful APIs and microservices.
- Strong understanding of software engineering principles and best practices.
- Experience working within Agile software delivery environments.
- Proficiency with Git and modern development workflows.
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to engage effectively with clients and stakeholders.
- Experience working in a customer-facing, consultancy, or stakeholder-driven environment.
- Experience working within Financial Services, Banking, FinTech, Insurance or Wealth Management environments.
- Previous consultancy or professional services experience.
- Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure or GCP.
- Knowledge of containerisation technologies including Docker and Kubernetes.
- Experience working with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices.
- Understanding of event-driven architecture and messaging technologies.
- Exposure to modern front-end frameworks and technologies.
- AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor, ChatGPT, Claude or similar technologies.
- Experience using AI to improve development efficiency, code quality and delivery outcomes.
- Exposure to AI-powered automation solutions.
- Experience integrating AI services, APIs or Large Language Models (LLMs) into applications.
- Interest in emerging AI technologies and their practical application within software development.
You'll be comfortable balancing hands-on development with client engagement and will enjoy the variety that comes from working across multiple projects, industries and technologies.
