Senior Laboratory Chemist - Hazardous Waste

Location: Birmingham, UK

Salary: circa. £36,000pa (DOE)

Working Hours: Monday to Friday - 7:30am - 4:30pm

My client is seeking a Senior Laboratory Chemist to join their team in Birmingham, taking a leading role in the analysis and classification of hazardous and non-hazardous waste streams, providing technical expertise to operational teams, and supporting laboratory quality, safety, and compliance standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform chemical and physical analysis of hazardous and non-hazardous waste streams, interpreting results to support waste management decisions.
  • Provide technical guidance on analytical methods, waste acceptance, chemical compatibility, and complex waste streams.
  • Ensure compliance with health, safety, environmental, and quality standards through risk assessment and continuous improvement activities.
  • Communicate analytical findings and recommendations to customers and internal stakeholders.
  • Support laboratory operations through equipment maintenance, quality control, and the training of junior staff.

Requirements:

  • Degree, HND/HNC, or equivalent experience in Chemistry, Analytical Science, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • Strong laboratory experience in chemistry, environmental testing, waste management, or a similar industry.
  • Knowledge of analytical techniques, laboratory instrumentation, and wet chemistry methods.
  • Understanding of waste classification, environmental legislation, and health & safety requirements (WM3 and ADR knowledge desirable).
  • Ability to interpret analytical data, communicate technical findings, and support safe, efficient laboratory operations.
  • Must be based in the UK and have full settled status or citizenship. Unfortunately Sponsorship cannot be provided for this role.
