Winsearch are recruiting for a Laboratory Supervisor on behalf of a well-established aerospace engineering business based in Stalybridge. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced laboratory professional with a background in surface treatment, coatings, chemical processing, or a regulated manufacturing environment.
The successful candidate will take responsibility for overseeing laboratory activities, ensuring testing is completed in line with customer, industry, and regulatory requirements while supporting quality, compliance, and continuous improvement initiatives across the business.
The Role
Reporting to the Quality Manager, you will lead the day-to-day operation of the laboratory, ensuring testing schedules, compliance requirements, and quality standards are maintained. You will support laboratory and production teams through the analysis of test results, investigation of non-conformances, and implementation of corrective actions where required.
This role would suit someone with strong analytical skills, a hands-on approach, and experience working within a chemical or coatings laboratory environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage laboratory workload to ensure all testing is completed within required timescales.
- Carry out and review chemical and solution analysis.
- Analyse laboratory data and identify trends or potential issues.
- Ensure corrective actions are taken when warning or control limits are reached.
- Investigate test failures, non-conformances, and process deviations.
- Review and approve external testing certificates and supplier documentation.
- Maintain effective stock control of laboratory consumables and chemicals.
- Create, review, and update laboratory procedures, work instructions, and documentation.
- Support qualification and validation activities for new processes and customer requirements.
- Conduct COSHH assessments and promote safe working practices.
- Operate and maintain laboratory equipment including titration systems and corrosion testing equipment.
- Provide technical support to production and quality teams.
- Support internal and external audits, including customer and accreditation audits.
- Assist with hands-on testing and provide cover within the laboratory team when required.
About You
We are keen to speak with candidates who have:
- Experience within a laboratory environment, ideally within surface treatment, chemical processing, coatings, or manufacturing.
- A strong understanding of chemical analysis techniques.
- Experience working safely with hazardous chemicals, acids, and alkalis.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and organisational skills.
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
- The ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work across multiple departments.
Desirable Experience
- A-Level, HNC, HND, Degree, or equivalent qualification in Chemistry or a related scientific discipline.
- Experience within aerospace, engineering, or highly regulated manufacturing sectors.
- Knowledge of quality management systems such as ISO 9001 and AS9100.
- Familiarity with NADCAP requirements, particularly AC7108.
- Experience supporting internal and external audits.
- Strong understanding of health, safety, and environmental requirements within a laboratory setting.
