Senior Land Surveyor
FERROVIAL CONSTRUCTION (UK) LIMITED
As Senior Surveying Engineer, you will serve as the technical authority for all surveying matters within Ferrovial Construction at Heathrow Airport, providing leadership, governance and specialist expertise across multiple projects from tender stage to completion.
You will be responsible for ensuring surveying activities are delivered safely, accurately and in accordance with project requirements, while supporting the development of surveying capability, standards and innovation across the organisation.
Responsibilities and duties
- Acting as the technical authority and main point of contact for technical surveying matters.
- Managing and coordinating surveyors and specialist subcontractors across multiple projects, including collaboration with project managers, site teams, designers and client representatives.
- Ensuring surveying personnel are trained, competent and working safely, while mentoring junior surveyors and supporting capability development.
- Providing technical support, troubleshooting and guidance on survey-related issues across projects.
- Planning and managing survey activities, including methodologies, accuracy requirements, resources, programmes, desk studies and site familiarisation.
- Reviewing and approving drawings, specifications, methodologies, setting out strategies and subcontractor deliverables to ensure compliance with project requirements.
- Establishing and maintaining survey control networks, including GNSS, traversing and precise levelling, and overseeing audits and verification checks.
- Delivering and managing structural monitoring, laser scanning, and digital survey outputs.
- Managing QA/QC processes, including data validation, accuracy checks, instrument calibration, and verification procedures.
- Identifying survey risks, investigating discrepancies, and implementing mitigation and corrective actions.
- Supporting design teams by advising on survey constraints, assumptions and achievable tolerances.
- Developing and maintaining surveying standards, procedures and best practices.
- Managing survey equipment selection, procurement, hire and utilisation.
- Researching and implementing innovative surveying technologies and digital workflows (e.g. laser scanning, robotics, UAVs).
- Providing surveying input into tenders, methodologies, construction planning and technical proposals.
- Supporting the continuous development of surveying capability across the business.
Qualifications and Experience
Preferably qualified to diploma or certificate level in civil engineering, geomatics or land surveying
Technical knowledge: Expert-level understanding of modern surveying instruments GNSS/GPS, 3D lazer scanners, digital levels, total stations and drafting / mapping software Autocad, Civil 3D, StarNet, ReCap, Leica Cyclone / Trimble Business Center/Leica GeoMos/ Pix4D , GIS and similar
Site and office surveying experience
Experience of leading and managing survey teams / projects. Using Leica/ Trimble/Topcon instruments. On field GPS static measurements and transformations, primary control installation measurements, and adjustment calculations. Setting up and managing monitoring reports. Developing method statement and risk assessments.
Skills and Competencies
- Knowledge of, or experience in, the construction industry
- Experience operating Total Stations and Automated Levels
- Experience in Instrumentation and Monitoring (preferential)
- Experience in interpreting data from the survey campaigns
- Highly detail-oriented
- Strong analytical skills
- IT skills, including knowledge of industry-specific software
