This Senior Mechanical Design Engineer role is with a global engineering business in Wimborne, working within a technically strong mechanical design team supporting complex, high-integrity products. The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer will act as a senior technical lead rather than a formal people manager, taking ownership of design activity, reviewing engineering output and supporting projects across the full product lifecycle.
The role covers concept development, detailed design, qualification, manufacture, production support and in-service issues, making it well suited to a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer who wants to remain technically hands-on while taking on greater technical leadership.
The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer role
As Senior Mechanical Design Engineer, you’ll lead technical work packages, produce and review design solutions, support design reviews and provide guidance to other engineers. You’ll work closely with Manufacturing, Supply Chain, project teams and external engineering resources to make sure designs are robust, manufacturable and delivered to the required standards.
Day-to-day responsibilities of a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer
- Produce concept and detailed mechanical designs for new and existing products
- Develop designs from customer and system-level requirements
- Complete supporting calculations including stress, performance and tolerance analysis
- Produce and review manufacturing drawings and technical documentation
- Check and approve engineering output produced by other designers and engineers
- Present technical solutions at internal and customer design reviews
- Lead technical activity across allocated projects and work packages
- Support NPI, qualification and product validation activity
- Provide technical support to Manufacturing and Supply Chain during product build
- Respond to supplier queries around drawings, tolerances and design intent
- Review concessions, engineering changes and drawing-change requests
- Support production and in-service engineering issues
- Mentor and guide less experienced engineers
- Contribute to improvements in engineering processes and design standards
- Strong mechanical design experience within aerospace, defence or another high-integrity engineering environment
- Experience taking designs from concept through to production-ready definition
- Strong 3D CAD capability, ideally CREO
- Experience reviewing, checking or approving engineering drawings and technical output
- Good understanding of GD&T, tolerance analysis and design for manufacture
- Experience working with controlled drawing release, configuration control and PLM systems
- Able to manage several technical deliverables across different projects
- Confident providing technical leadership without formal line-management responsibility
- Strong communication skills with the ability to mentor and support other engineers
- Degree, HNC/HND or equivalent experience in Mechanical, Aerospace or a related discipline
- Aerospace design experience
- Mechanical actuation, fluid systems, pneumatics or hydraulics exposure
- Metallic component or precision-machined product design
- NPI and aerospace qualification experience
- Additive manufacturing or metallic 3D-printing exposure
- CATIA or SolidWorks experience
- Six Sigma or structured design improvement methods
- Experience supporting outsourced or remote engineering teams
