Senior Mechanical Design Engineer   Hours: 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday   We are currently recruiting for an exciting opportunity for a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join a specialist engineering business based in Cambridgeshire. This is an opportunity to work on highly engineered, specialist machinery with a genuine real-world impact, taking products from initial concept through to manufacture, testing and continuous improvement.   The Role   Reporting to the Head of Engineering, you will provide technical leadership within the design function and be responsible for developing robust, cost-effective and manufacturable mechanical solutions. Your responsibilities will include:
  • Developing detailed 3D CAD models, assemblies and manufacturing drawings. 
  • Taking designs from concept through to manufacture. 
  • Carrying out engineering calculations, tolerancing and design validation. 
  • Using FEA and simulation where appropriate. 
  • Selecting materials and appropriate manufacturing processes. 
  • Working closely with manufacturing, quality, procurement and suppliers. 
  • Investigating technical issues and developing effective solutions. 
  • Improving product performance, reliability, weight and cost. 
  • Supporting prototypes, testing and product development. 
  • Providing technical direction and mentoring to less-experienced engineers. 
  • Ensuring designs meet relevant engineering standards, legislation and safety requirements. 
About You   The successful candidate will have:
  • Strong experience in a mechanical design engineering role. 
  • Excellent experience using industry-standard 3D CAD systems. 
  • Experience designing for manufacture, including machining, fabrication and welding. 
  • Strong understanding of materials, tolerancing, fits and engineering principles. 
  • Experience with engineering calculations and ideally FEA. 
  • The ability to take ownership of projects from concept through to production. 
  • Strong problem-solving and technical decision-making skills. 
  • Experience working collaboratively with manufacturing, quality, procurement and suppliers. 
  • The confidence to provide technical leadership and support junior engineers. 
  • An engineering degree or comparable qualification/accreditation.
