Senior Mechanical Engineer

We’re recruiting a Mechanical Engineer for a London Borough Council to manage mechanical maintenance across corporate and leisure buildings and deliver small works projects valued from £15,000 to £250,000.
You’ll take ownership of day-to-day maintenance, instructing contractors, managing staff and providing expert technical advice on repairs. Alongside this, you’ll lead M&E projects from initial surveys and design through specification, tendering and delivery.
The role will involve:
- Managing planned and reactive maintenance, statutory testing and servicing contracts.
- Inspecting buildings, diagnosing faults and specifying appropriate repairs.
- Directing contractors and staff, monitoring workmanship and ensuring issues are resolved.
- Preparing designs, specifications, drawings, cost estimates and tender documentation.
- Managing procurement, contract administration and project delivery against agreed budgets and programmes.
- Ensuring works meet relevant building regulations, statutory requirements and health and safety standards.
You’ll need:
- A degree or higher qualification in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services Engineering.
- At least 10 years’ mechanical engineering experience, with a substantial background in building services maintenance.
- At least five years’ experience managing mechanical engineers delivering maintenance and installation works in commercial buildings.
- Experience managing contractors and staff across corporate and leisure premises.
- A track record of taking projects from design and specification through tendering to completion.
- Strong technical knowledge of heating, ventilation, cooling, commercial gas installations, controls and Legionella management.
- Experience working in a client-side mechanical engineering role within the public sector or a large organisation.
This would suit an engineer who enjoys resolving practical maintenance issues and taking responsibility for delivering building services projects from start to finish.
