Senior Mechanical Engineer

SoCode Limited

Socode are partnering with a Cambridge-based medical technology company developing a next-generation system used in minimal access surgery. As the platform continues to evolve, they're looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to take ownership of significant design work packages across the wider electromechanical system.

The role is a genuinely hands-on one. You'll pick up sizeable pieces of design work and see them all the way through — early concepts, detailed design, prototype builds, testing and eventually release into production. Day to day you'll be working closely with electronics, software, systems, manufacturing and quality colleagues on a product where the mechanical detail really matters. Hybrid working is on offer, with three days a week expected on site.

What will you be doing?
  • Running mechanical design activity on new products and product improvements, working within a regulated design process
  • Holding end-to-end responsibility for your own work packages rather than picking up isolated tasks
  • Modelling parts and assemblies in SolidWorks, using surfacing where the geometry calls for it
  • Designing for real-world manufacture across machined, sheet metal and moulded components
  • Getting hands on with prototypes and test rigs, then using what you learn to improve the design
  • Producing and reviewing drawings and configuration documentation to a high standard
  • Writing up technical reports to support verification activity and design reviews
  • Digging into product problems, working out what's actually causing them, and putting fixes in place
  • Sharing knowledge with less experienced engineers and acting as a technical sounding board
  • Helping shape the team's tools, standards and ways of working as the department grows
What are they looking for?
  • A background in mechanical design where products you've worked on have made it into production
  • Confident SolidWorks user, comfortable with both solid and surface modelling
  • Good grasp of design for manufacture across machining, sheet metal and injection moulding
  • Able to size and justify designs from first principles rather than relying on iteration alone
  • Used to owning technically complex work and being accountable for the outcome
  • Pragmatic decision-maker who can weigh up cost, quality, manufacturability and timescales
  • Strong on drawings — creating them, checking them and interpreting other people's
  • Comfortable writing technical documentation such as reports and design review material
  • Educated to degree level in Mechanical Engineering or something closely related
Nice to have
  • Time spent in a regulated industry, ideally medical devices under ISO 13485 and/or IEC 60601
  • Involvement in transferring designs into low volume manufacture
  • Familiarity with BS 8888, and ideally GD&T to ISO 1101
