About Prospero Group

Prospero Group is looking for an experienced and detail-oriented Senior Payroller to join our team and take responsibility for the oversight, accuracy and sign-off of our weekly payroll. This will be on a contract basis for 6-12 months.

Working closely with our payroll processing team in India, you will play a key role in ensuring payroll is processed accurately, efficiently and in line with UK legislation and company procedures. The India team will be responsible for the day-to-day payroll processing, while you will provide quality control, guidance and final checks before payroll is approved for payment.

This is an excellent opportunity for a confident payroll professional who enjoys working collaboratively across teams, has a strong eye for detail and takes ownership of payroll accuracy and compliance.

The Role

As Senior Payroller, you will oversee the weekly payroll cycle, reviewing the work completed by our India-based payroll team and ensuring all calculations, employee changes and payroll outputs are accurate before final sign-off.

You will act as the key point of contact for payroll queries and escalations, investigating discrepancies, ensuring deadlines are met and maintaining high standards of payroll governance and compliance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the weekly payroll process, ensuring all payroll activities are completed accurately and within strict deadlines.

  • Review and validate payroll prepared by the India processing team before final approval and sign-off.

  • Carry out detailed payroll checks, including gross-to-net calculations, deductions, overtime, bonuses, statutory payments, starters, leavers and employee amendments.

  • Investigate payroll discrepancies, identify root causes and ensure errors are corrected before payroll is finalised.

  • Take ownership of payroll accuracy, ensuring appropriate checks and controls are completed before authorising payroll for payment.

  • Work closely with the India team to provide guidance, clarify queries and ensure consistent payroll processes and standards.

  • Monitor payroll deadlines and proactively address issues that could affect the timely processing of weekly payroll.

  • Ensure compliance with UK payroll legislation, including PAYE, National Insurance, statutory payments, pensions and HMRC reporting requirements.

  • Review payroll reports, reconciliations and exception reports, ensuring discrepancies are investigated and resolved.

  • Act as the escalation point for complex employee payroll queries, working with HR and Finance where required.

  • Ensure payroll records are accurate, complete and maintained in line with data protection and confidentiality requirements.

  • Support payroll year-end activities, including P60s, reconciliations and statutory reporting.

  • Identify opportunities to improve payroll controls, reporting, efficiency and communication between the UK and India teams.

About You

We are looking for someone who has strong UK payroll experience and the confidence to review, challenge and approve payroll processed by others.

You will ideally have:

  • Proven experience in a Senior Payroller, Payroll Supervisor or similar payroll oversight role.

  • Strong knowledge of UK weekly payroll processes and relevant payroll legislation.

  • Experience reviewing and checking payroll calculations and outputs before sign-off.

  • Excellent attention to detail and the ability to identify errors, inconsistencies and potential risks.

  • The confidence to challenge discrepancies and ensure issues are fully resolved before payroll approval.

  • Experience working with offshore payroll teams or shared service centres, ideally across different locations.

  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities and tight weekly deadlines.

  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to build effective working relationships with colleagues in the UK and India.

  • A proactive approach to problem-solving, process improvement and payroll controls.

  • A high level of integrity and discretion when handling confidential employee and financial information.

  • Good working knowledge of payroll systems and Microsoft Excel.

A recognised payroll qualification, such as a CIPP qualification, would be advantageous.

What We Offer

  • A competitive salary, dependent on experience.

  • The opportunity to take ownership of payroll quality and control within a growing organisation.

  • A collaborative working environment with close involvement across UK and international teams.

  • Opportunities to improve processes and contribute to the ongoing development of the payroll function.

  • The opportunity to play a key role in ensuring a smooth, accurate and reliable weekly payroll operation.
