Senior Planning Engineer – London Underground projects

Our client, Taylor Woodrow, a leading infrastructure and civil engineering specialist, is seeking an experienced Senior Planning Engineer to support the successful delivery of major infrastructure projects across the region, with a particular focus on works delivered for London Underground.

This is an excellent opportunity to join a well-established team working on complex rail and infrastructure programmes within one of the UK's most demanding operational environments.

The Role

Working closely with Project Leads, Site Teams and the Pre-Construction function, you will play a key role in developing, maintaining and managing project programmes from tender stage through to project delivery.

This role would suit an experienced Planner with a strong understanding of project delivery, or an operational professional who has progressed into planning and can bring practical construction knowledge into the programming process.

The successful candidate will combine technical planning expertise with strong communication skills, enabling them to work collaboratively with project teams and provide clear, accurate programme information to support project performance.

Candidates with previous experience working on London Underground projects are highly desirable. However, applications are also welcomed from individuals with planning experience across other rail sectors including Network Rail, light rail, metro, station upgrades, rail civils, track, signalling, power, electrification or wider transport infrastructure projects.

Duties

  • Develop, maintain and manage detailed project programmes throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Produce programmes and planning submissions for client review and approval.
  • Support Project Managers and Site Teams with programme development, progress monitoring and reporting.
  • Capture and analyse project performance data to ensure programme updates are submitted accurately and on time.
  • Identify programme risks and opportunities, contributing to project risk management activities.
  • Develop tender programmes and support the Pre-Construction team during bid submissions.
  • Prepare programme narratives and supporting documentation.
  • Assist with resource planning, cost loading and Earned Value Analysis activities.
  • Liaise with suppliers, subcontractors and key stakeholders to ensure programme assumptions and delivery strategies are aligned.
  • Support the evaluation of construction methodologies, possessions, access requirements and temporary works solutions.
  • Coach and mentor junior planning team members, sharing best practice and planning expertise.
  • Utilise Primavera P6 and Microsoft Project to develop and manage project programmes.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and business objectives relating to sustainability and operational excellence.

Person Specification

  • Previous experience as a Planning Engineer or Senior Planning Engineer within the rail, infrastructure, civil engineering or major projects sector.
  • Experience working on London Underground projects is highly desirable.
  • Candidates with experience across Network Rail or other rail infrastructure environments will also be considered.
  • Strong understanding of project delivery, programme controls and construction methodologies.
  • Experience working closely with project teams, site management and operational stakeholders.
  • Proficient in Primavera P6 and Microsoft Project.
  • Ability to identify programme risks and develop practical mitigation strategies.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to build effective working relationships across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Experience producing tender programmes and supporting pre-construction activities.
  • Knowledge of resource planning, progress reporting and programme controls.
  • CSCS Card holder.
  • Understanding of working within live operational rail environments would be advantageous.
  • A proactive, collaborative approach with the ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
  • Individuals who have progressed from a site-based or project delivery background into planning are encouraged to apply.

What's on Offer

This is an excellent opportunity to join Taylor Woodrow's South Region and play a key role in delivering critical infrastructure improvements for London Underground and the wider rail sector.

You will work alongside experienced planning, project delivery and pre-construction teams on high-profile projects that contribute to the continued development of London's transport network.
