Senior Quantity Surveyor

We’re looking for an experienced and commercially driven Senior Quantity Surveyor to join a growing commercial team delivering major rail and civil engineering projects across Wales. This is an excellent opportunity for a Senior QS who wants to take genuine commercial ownership, work on high-profile infrastructure projects and play a key role in the continued growth of a successful delivery team.

The project portfolio includes rail infrastructure, stations, bridges, structures, highways, tunnels, embankments and environmental schemes, working with major infrastructure clients including Network Rail and Transport for Wales. You’ll have the opportunity to lead significant projects, influence commercial strategy and work closely with senior operational and commercial stakeholders.

The Role:

As Senior Quantity Surveyor, you’ll take responsibility for the commercial management and performance of major projects and work packages, typically ranging from £1m to £10m+. You’ll work closely with Project Managers, Site Managers, clients, subcontractors and the wider commercial team to ensure projects are delivered safely, successfully and profitably. This is a role for someone who can take ownership, challenge decisions, identify opportunities and provide strong commercial leadership throughout the project lifecycle.

What You’ll Be Doing

• Lead the commercial management of major rail and civil engineering projects
• Take ownership of project commercial performance, budgets and forecasts
• Prepare and manage CVRs, cost reports, forecasts and final accounts
• Lead valuations, applications for payment and commercial reporting
• Manage subcontract procurement, negotiations, payments and contractual compliance
• Identify, assess and maximise change and commercial opportunities
• Manage compensation events, early warnings, risks and contractual issues
• Administer NEC and Network Rail forms of contract
• Lead commercial negotiations with clients and supply chain partners
• Work closely with Project Managers and Site Managers to drive project performance
• Provide commercial advice and challenge to operational teams
• Develop strong, long-term relationships with clients and key stakeholders
• Mentor and support junior and project-level Quantity Surveyors
• Contribute to commercial strategy, process improvement and best practice
• Support the wider commercial team with tenders, forecasting and business development where required

What We’re Looking For:

You’ll be an experienced Senior Quantity Surveyor with a strong background in rail, civil engineering or infrastructure.

We’re particularly interested in candidates with:

• Significant experience managing the commercial delivery of civil engineering projects
• Strong knowledge and practical experience of NEC contracts
• Experience working on rail, structures, highways or major infrastructure projects
• Proven experience managing projects from procurement through to final account
• Strong commercial and contractual awareness
• Excellent negotiation and stakeholder management skills
• The ability to influence project teams and drive commercial performance
• Experience managing and developing junior commercial staff
• Strong financial, analytical and reporting skills
• A proactive, commercially focused and collaborative approach
• A relevant degree, HNC/HND or equivalent qualification
