We are recruiting an experienced Senior Quantity Surveyor to join a busy commercial team supporting major programmes within the UK nuclear defence sector.

This is an opportunity to work within a strategically important industry that plays a vital role in maintaining national security. You will contribute to complex, high-value projects where safety, security, commercial governance and operational excellence are paramount.

The Role

As Senior Quantity Surveyor, you will lead pre-contract commercial activities across major infrastructure and engineering projects.

You will provide commercial expertise throughout the tendering and procurement lifecycle, with a particular focus on NEC3 and NEC4 forms of contract. The role will be instrumental in establishing robust procurement strategies, maintaining cost control and identifying commercial risks and opportunities from the outset.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead pre-contract commercial activities across major infrastructure and engineering projects.
  • Prepare detailed cost plans, estimates, benchmarking exercises and commercial appraisals.
  • Develop procurement and commercial strategies aligned with project and client objectives.
  • Prepare tender documentation and manage competitive tendering processes.
  • Undertake detailed tender evaluations, clarifications and commercial negotiations.
  • Support the preparation and review of NEC4 contract documentation and commercial schedules.
  • Identify, assess and price commercial risks and opportunities throughout the procurement process.
  • Collaborate with bid, engineering, planning, procurement and project delivery teams.
  • Ensure compliance with company governance, contractual obligations and industry best practice.
  • Support supply-chain engagement, subcontractor selection and commercial due diligence.
  • Produce accurate commercial reports, forecasts and recommendations for senior stakeholders.
Skills and Experience

Candidates should have proven experience in pre-contract commercial management, procurement and tendering within major infrastructure, engineering, defence, nuclear or construction environments.

You will ideally demonstrate:

  • Strong practical knowledge of NEC3 and NEC4 forms of contract.
  • Experience leading procurement and tendering activities on complex, high-value projects.
  • Excellent commercial awareness, analytical ability and negotiation skills.
  • The ability to interpret technical and contractual information and develop effective commercial solutions.
  • Experience preparing cost estimates, commercial reports and risk assessments.
  • Strong stakeholder-management and communication skills.
  • The ability to influence and provide commercial guidance at all levels.
  • A proactive and collaborative approach to working within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Excellent organisation, time management and attention to detail.
  • A degree in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.

Membership of, or progress towards membership of, a recognised professional body such as RICS or CICES would be advantageous.

Security Requirements

Due to the nature of the projects, the successful candidate may be required to obtain and maintain the appropriate level of UK security clearance.
