THE BUSINESS

Westray Recruitment Group is seeking a Senior Quantity Surveyor to join an established Chartered Quantity Surveying consultancy with a strong specialism in NEC4 contract and commercial project delivery.

The business works alongside clients and delivery partners across major power, energy, infrastructure, construction, engineering and utilities projects, providing specialist commercial and contractual expertise.

This is not simply a traditional Senior Quantity Surveyor position. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to further develop their expertise in NEC4, operate as a trusted commercial advisor to clients and contribute to the successful delivery of complex projects.

The organisation places considerable emphasis on developing its people throughout their careers, providing access to professional mentoring, specialist NEC4 training and structured leadership development.

The opportunity could therefore suit an experienced Quantity Surveyor looking to step into their first Senior QS position, as well as an established Senior Quantity Surveyor who wants to deepen their NEC4 expertise and progress towards specialist-level responsibility. The client's Senior QS specification expressly accommodates both profiles.

THE ROLE

• You will manage and provide advice on NEC contracts, including Main and Secondary Options and Contract Data.
• Provide strategic commercial and contractual advice to clients and project teams.
• Support the preparation and management of contractual documentation.
• Provide guidance regarding Scope and Site Information and ensure alignment with contractual requirements.
• Understand and advise on the roles, responsibilities and obligations of parties operating under NEC contracts.
• Manage contractual communications and ensure appropriate commercial records and controls are maintained.
• Assess, manage and implement compensation events and associated programme impacts.
• Work alongside Project Managers and planners to assess programme requirements and project impacts.
• Manage commercial aspects of NEC contracts including Defined Cost, Disallowed Cost, Fee and the Schedule of Cost Components.
• Lead the preparation of pricing documentation across different NEC4 main contract options.
• Manage and assess compensation events collaboratively with project teams.
• Advise clients on contractual positions and associated commercial risks.
• Manage early warning processes and support proactive risk mitigation.
• Provide clear commercial analysis and practical solutions to complex project challenges.
• Develop strong relationships with clients, contractors, subcontractors and wider project teams.
• Act as a visible and trusted commercial advisor within project teams.
• Facilitate workshops and presentations relating to NEC matters and commercial best practice.
• Provide guidance and support to colleagues and wider project teams.
• Promote collaboration, collective responsibility and effective problem solving.
• Support the development of high-performing project teams.
• Take a leadership role in driving successful commercial and contractual project outcomes.
The Senior QS role carries significantly greater advisory and leadership responsibility, including NEC contract management, programme, payment/change management and leadership across project teams.

THE PERSON

• You will ideally hold a degree or equivalent qualification in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management or Engineering, although HNC/HND qualifications will also be considered.
• You will have strong Quantity Surveying and commercial management experience.
• You will demonstrate competence at NEC Practitioner or NEC Specialist level, or possess relevant experience with similar contractual forms.
• You will have a strong understanding of NEC contracts and their practical commercial application.
• You will have experience of NEC payment mechanisms, compensation events and commercial change management.
• You will understand programme management and commercial risk mitigation.
• Knowledge of Defined Cost, Disallowed Cost, Fee and Schedule of Cost Components would be beneficial.
• You will be capable of interpreting contractual positions and providing clear commercial advice.
• Strong client-facing and stakeholder management skills are essential.
• You will be confident working alongside Project Managers, planners, contractors, subcontractors and wider project teams.
• You will have strong leadership and communication skills.
• You will be comfortable supporting and developing less experienced colleagues.
• You will be collaborative in your approach while having the confidence to constructively challenge where required.
• Membership, or progression towards membership, of RICS, CICES, CIOB or MAPM would be advantageous.
• You will have a genuine desire to further develop your NEC4 expertise and progress towards NEC Specialist level.
• A full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle are required due to regular site visits and business travel.
