Are you an experienced Science Technician looking to take the next step in your career?

We are recruiting for a highly organised, knowledgeable and proactive Senior Science Technician to join a successful secondary school in Birmingham. This is an exciting opportunity to lead the day-to-day operation of a busy Science Technician team and play a key role in supporting the delivery of outstanding Science education across Key Stages 3, 4 and 5.

The successful candidate will work closely with the Head of Science to ensure the highest standards of practical support, laboratory management, health and safety compliance, and resource organisation throughout the department.

This is a permanent position offering the opportunity to make a significant contribution to a thriving Science department within a supportive and ambitious school environment.

The Role

As Senior Science Technician, you will:

  • Lead, support and supervise the Science Technician team.
  • Coordinate workloads and ensure an efficient technician service across the department.
  • Prepare and oversee practical resources for KS3, GCSE and A Level Science lessons.
  • Provide technical advice and support to teaching staff.
  • Maintain laboratories, preparation rooms and storage areas to an exceptional standard.
  • Lead stock control, equipment audits and resource management.
  • Manage equipment orders, deliveries and supplier relationships.
  • Support practical assessments, STEM activities and enrichment events.
  • Ensure laboratories remain safe, compliant and well organised.
  • Promote best practice across all practical Science activities.

Health & Safety Responsibilities

The successful candidate will take a lead role in ensuring compliance with all relevant health and safety requirements, including:

  • CLEAPSS guidance
  • COSHH regulations
  • Risk assessments
  • Safe chemical storage and disposal
  • Laboratory inspections and audits
  • Equipment maintenance, servicing and testing

You will be responsible for maintaining outstanding standards of health and safety across all Science facilities.

Candidate Requirements

Essential

Science qualification at Level 3 or above, or significant experience working as a Science Technician.

Experience working within a secondary school Science department.

Experience preparing practical lessons safely and efficiently.

Experience managing laboratory resources, chemicals and equipment.

Strong understanding of laboratory health and safety requirements.

Knowledge of CLEAPSS guidance and COSHH regulations.

Excellent organisational and time management skills.

Strong communication and teamwork skills.

Ability to support teachers and students during practical lessons.

Confident IT skills including Microsoft Office.

Commitment to safeguarding, equality and inclusion.

Desirable

Degree or higher education qualification in a Science-related subject.

Previous experience as a Senior or Lead Science Technician.

Experience supervising or mentoring other technicians.

Experience supporting A Level practical work.

CLEAPSS training or accreditation.

Experience managing budgets and procurement.

Experience using inventory management systems.

Experience supporting STEM clubs, competitions or outreach activities.
